The Transportation Department's Traffic Safety Bureau reports 23 fatal motor vehicle accidents in January, causing 29 deaths. One crash caused four deaths, another three, one two, and 20 each caused one fatality. In January 1983 there were 26 fatal accidents and 26 fatalities.

Ferdinand G. Behmlander aged 94 died February 22 in Silver City at Gila Regional Medical Center. A lifelong professional in Lordsburg he practiced as a doctor and dentist before retiring at 78. Survived by daughter Carolynn B.
