Softball League Action Clears Week With Wide Scores

The week of play in the Lords Softball leagues saw leaders tumble and standings shuffled. Poco and Dockum opened Thursday with a high scoring 14 to 10 game as Dockum, short-handed, allowed 14 runs on 12 hits and 4 walks. In the nightcap Banner Mine defeated CYO 8 to 3 as Ban Moe drove in 8 runs on 9 hits with 4 errors by CYO. National Jam overwhelmed Motor 19 to 9 as the Guard collected 17 hits and 19 runs aided by Rich's Motor's 9 runs on 3 walks. Saturday rain shortened the schedule. Rich's Motor faced stiff defense and Mine struggled against Rich's Motor.

A Saturday evening concert on the courthouse lawn drew a large crowd under director Roger Welles. The program featured well known selections and showcased many band members plus a special mention for helpers who moved equipment.

Grand Opening Of Elks Club Attracts Fifty Or More

Approximately seventy couples attended the Elks Club grand opening on Saturday night June 24. Music by the Marufo Orchestra accompanied a semiformal dance in a newly redecorated hall with a modern ladies powder room. Exalted Ruler Kinkema led tours of the lounge recreation room and refreshment area. Fousta Noce chaired decorations and fund raising to cover redecorating costs and club treasury. Regular meetings resume in September with July 12 and August 9 slated as second Wednesday meetings.

Hidalgo County Budget Hearings Set for Lordsburg June 29

Frank V. Ortiz of the State Tax Commission reports 1960 Hidalgo County and Municipal budget hearings to be held in Lordsburg. The Halgo County budget goes to the courthouse at 9:00 A M. Lordsburg City budget at 12:00 P M. Virden at 2:00 P M at City Hall for the day.

Freeburgs Consult Architect Over New High School Plan

Mr and Mrs Wesley Freeburg of eastern New Mexico visited an architect to discuss the town’s new high school building. The public heard delays are due to a shortage of draftsmen and the architect’s limited availability. The couple planned to meet in Clovis after brief trips to Ruidoso and Roswell, with updates to come.
