Five Girls Compete in County 4-H Contest Across Districts

Mrs Eva Thomas reports 34 entrants in county 4-H in several divisions at Copper High School. Blue ribbons go to Mary Dallies Lordsburg Sherrie Hatch Virden Veck Animas plus Gwen Youngblood Gail Strawn Deborrah Virden Jeanette Lordsburg and others. red and white ribbons awarded to many in foods clothing home economics and crafts with standout performances in dress and talent events.

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County of Commerce reports that business places will close on July 4. The notice urges local merchants and services to observe Independence Day closures and adjust schedules accordingly.

VFW State Convention Honors Lordsburg Leaders

The New Mexico VFW state convention in Alamogordo drew 500 delegates. Johnnie Bollinger of Clovis was named Department Commander and Mrs. Johnie Bobbitt of Hobbs became Department President. Lordsburg representatives Francisco Chaires James H. Kinkema and Sam Cotton attended. Past Commander Joe Esquire, and Kinkema earned top honors with diamond and ruby pins, Mitch Payne received a distinguished service award, and the Lordsburg Ladies Auxiliary earned a Community Service award and an altar cloth for membership growth with Governor Ed Mechem delivering the address.

House Defeats Farm Bill in New Mexico

The New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau chief praised the House defeat of the administration farm bill, saying it will gratify farmers and ranchers statewide. W Langenegger stated the bill would raise costs to taxpayers and lower farm income, and NM Representatives Morris and Montoya voted to send the proposal back to committee.

Knights of Pythias Plan Annual Fourth of July Barbecue

The Knights of Pythias will hold its annual Fourth of July barbecue at the usual picnic grounds near the Silver City road. Members, Pythian Sisters, the Sunshine Girl and friends may attend with their own plates and utensils. Barbecued meat beans coffee and bread will be served. Games will be played before and after the meal.

Three Teams Still Undefeated In Boys' Baseball

Three teams remained undefeated in boys baseball as high scores and strong hitting marked the week. Banner Miners crushed the Elks 21 6 before rain halted play in the third innings. Shell Oilers beat Banner Miners 7 6 for their second win. Scofield’s team defeated the Elk 11 3 as RK Baisa struck out ten. Pony League action saw LULACS edge CPS 10 9 while Slick’s beat Sheriff 6 2 and 8 3 in successive games.

Craig resigns after 1955 tenure as Lordsburg High School head coach. Howard Harkey, former Junior High coach and summer driver trainer, will take over. Craig to West Covina High School. Harkey brings two years at Cape Charles and a 12 5 record at Lordsburg plus district titles.
