An analysis by Augustine of Las Cruces argues that agriculture remains strong despite inflation, with rising yields and livestock output since 1940. He notes improved farm efficiency, lower food share of household income, and a need for supportive policy to ensure farmers receive fair prices amid broader economic changes.
J W Jones Construction Co of Albuquerque was the apparent low bidder on the Interstate 10 project east of Lordsburg with a bid of 3 796 347 32. Brown Construction Co bid 3 817 598 16 and the engineer’s estimate was 4 115 712 24. The project covers 5 161 miles from the east end of the divided highway to Lordsburg and includes interchanges bridges signing and lighting with completion in 300 working days. Bids were opened June 14 in Santa Fe.
James McCutchan was installed president of the Lordsburg Lions Club at a Ladies Night dinner at the Carl McMillan residence. Past District Governor Ernest Burleson of Deming acted as installing officer and also installed Boyd Harper first vice president John Robertson second vice president Bruce Moulton third vice president Art Ruiz secretary treasurer Gary Corbell tall twister John Johnson Lion Jammer Rodney Newton and Willis Cooper as new directors.
Randy Merrell of Animas elected district FFA president at the 43rd New Mexico State Association convention for 1971 72. Newly elected officers include Randy Kuykendall Las Cruces vice president Vince Robison Animas secretary Randell Mansell Las Cruces treasurer James Thompson Hatch reporter and Patrick Foy Cobre sentinel. The president will also serve as a state officer visiting each chapter in the district.
Army Specialist Five David S. Contreras, 22, son of Mr and Mrs Jose J Contreras of Lordsburg, earned the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Vietnam. He is a cook with the 105th Transportation Company at Fort Eustis. his wife Yolanda resides in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Father and Son golf tournament hosted Sunday featured 12 teams. Winners were Gene Moore with son Pete in first, Oscar Gutierrez with nephew Rene Saucedo in second, and Dave Waren and son in third. Prizes for most strokes and highest score went to Dr. Moore and son Mike. Betty Harris presented prizes, a fish fry followed, with food coordinators Patsy Richins Robbie Rutland and Ruby Warren recognized for donations from Joe Rutland Leo Harris and Marshall Fuller.
Lordsburg launches a summer league led by Mr J D Bryant and Thomas Wright with five teams from local and Asianinas competing. Weekday games feature Lordsburg Knicks beating Lordsburg Bucks 65 to 36 and Lordsburg Hawks routing Lordsburg Lakers 69 to 44. Bracket play continues with signups open for boys and potential adult coaches before June 26.
Chamber of Commerce reports most business places will close Monday July 5 to observe the Fourth of July holiday.
Alan A Koff sues the New Mexico State Highway Department the City of Lordsburg and AT&T for 300000 damages claiming entry onto land he leases for an airport and a taking for public use without just compensation. He alleges repeated acts of entry and intent to take all or part of the property and seeks payment for the alleged takings.
Judge Norman Hodges ruled by memorandum that Alan A. Koffs suit against the City of Lordsburg and Mayor Betty H. Lazar regarding a 400000 bond issue for extending and improving the water sewer and gas system was without merit. The ruling said the mayor and city council violated no law. The bond financed a new larger sewage disposal plant to replace the 30 year old facility.
Elks Lodge 13 and VFW Post observe Flag Day with Exalted Ruler J R Poindexter Jr presiding. Fisher Jr narrates flag history as Jeanne La Marca plays patriotic music while VFW honor guards display flags. Miss Anna Camcho, sponsored by the Elks, speaks on her Girls State experiences. the lodge serves refreshments afterward.
