New Law Cuts Exempt State Jobs Amid Patronage Debate

Senate Minority Leader Picacho sponsors a reform reducing exempt positions in state government under the Personnel Act to about 200, excluding heads of agencies and policy staff. The measure narrows exemptions, requires qualifying exams for many, and creates two grandfathered loops for short-term appointees. Emergency hires remain allowed from a qualified applicant list, with pay set at established rates.

Elks Sweep Week in Little League Puts KP Out Front

Strong hitting and tight pitching boosted the Elks as Ray Hernandez held the Knights of Pythias to three hits with nine strikeouts en route to a 9-2 win that knocked KP from the league lead. Pancho Guardiola homered and drove in runs while Joe Guerrero and Manny Renteria fueled Jaycees in an 8-7 victory over the VFW. The Community Public Service team opened with a 9-3 win over VFW, Manuel Parra delivering a three run homer. Guardiola then starred for the Elks with a homer and double and eight strikeouts as Elks beat the Jaycees 6-3. The Knights dropped a 11-9 decision to the Jaycees as Ybarra hit a two run homer. The Elk lineup blasted CPS 20-0 in a Wednesday night cap, rolling to 13 runs.

Walker Votes Against 80 Billion Federal Debt Increase

U S Rep Johnny Walker opposed the proposed raise of the public debt limit from 285 billion to 365 billion. He supported the February temporary increase but warned the permanent rise would create a blank check for the Administration and noted the issue would reappear before June 30.

Registration Opens for Men's Softball League Play

Registration is under way for a men’s softball league set to start in a few weeks if sufficient signups occur. A four team league will play on Tuesday and Thursday nights with no prior experience required. Approximately 60 players are needed. signups are with Sonny Badilla or City Recreation Director Dick McKelvie.

The Firecracker Open, a 36 hole golf event, runs July 1–2 at Scott Park Golf Course in Silver City. A shotgun start at 1 p.m. Saturday kicks off 18 holes, with 18 more Sunday morning and awards at 1 p.m. July 2.

Local man arrested in grocery burglary case

City police arrested Juan Gallegos, 21, Sunday evening in connection with the Saturday night burglary of Circle H Grocery on Highway 70. He faces a fourth degree felony burglary charge and a preliminary hearing is set today before Justice of the Peace C. L. Brown. A front window was broken and several items stolen, but no money was taken.

Trucker Charged After Fatal I 10 Collision Near Lordsburg

A flat bed truck driver Hilario Hernandez died and two companions were injured when their vehicle collided with a semi trailer on Interstate 10 about 23 miles east of Lordsburg. Larry Eugene Beckett, 24, of Swink Colorado, faces involuntary manslaughter charges as the crash headline details remain under police inquiry.
