Manuel Gonzales age 41 was killed about 9 am Saturday while working on the Thygerson Farm near Virden. A tree blew onto a high voltage line during the storm, knocking the line down as he touched a fence near the pole. Two coworkers found him. Gonzales, a bracero, left a wife and four children in Mexico.

Hugh McMillan of El Paso was awarded the paving and repair contract for city streets at a special city council meeting. His bid of 270 261 15 was the lowest among Burns Construction of Las Cruces 290 629 20 and O D Cowart of Albuquerque 396 587 88. city engineer William I Matotan estimated 285 189 09. The city netted 288 000 from bond sales and about 225 000 will remain for work after reserves and equipment costs. A bidder representative was to negotiate with Matotan.
