Local Residents Win Awards at Cotton Extravaganza

The 1977 Cotton Extravaganza at the Animal School Auditorium drew praise for outfits made of at least 60 percent cotton. Phil Hardt and his wife Laura won first place in the Evening Time Division for modeling and sewing. Russel Burris provided entertainment.

Arrests Made After Stolen Autos Recovered

Hidalgo County Sheriff's officers and Lordsburg City Police teamed up last week in recovering two stolen vehicles from Florida and Nevada. Dietdi Daniels 26 and Richard W. Evans 28 were arrested at Road Forks after a city police vehicle check. One suspect, Lemar Reed Baker 26, is jailed on a Nevada fugitive warrant after a separate roadside arrest on I-10. Two other occupants were released as hitch-hikers. The Florida and Nevada cases are pending federal action.

Women in Hidalgo County spend more years in the labor force

The piece cites Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing women now work about 25.1 years in a lifetime versus 15.1 years in 1950, while men drop from 41.5 to 39.8 years. It notes Hidalgo County women are 51 percent of the population and will average 51 years out of work due to life expectancy, with labor-force entry by wives cited as a factor.

Local Cleanup Underway in Lordsburg

A $10,000 grant used this year funds city cleanup of dangerous sites with city crews. Mayor Ted White reports two locations finished at the north end and on B Street near North Street, with work starting on A Street and additional sites planned. Three projects already completed and two more underway.

Safe stolen from home recovered by youths in Lordsburg

A safesfile cabinet stolen around July 22 from Joe Bivens’ Dun can Highway home was recovered by Lordsburg City Police after locals found it north of the town. The safe showed signs of rifling and had been burned. The Lordsburg Municipal School Board will meet Monday August 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Superintendent’s office.

Heavy Rains Hit Rodeo Area Causing Floods and Crash

In Hidalgo County Rodeo saw thunderstorms on Monday drop about three inches, totaling 5.35 inches for the week. Homes flooded and power outages were reported while Rodeo Grocery suffered minor flood damage and a truck blocked Highway 80 near the junction with State Road 9. Animas recorded 1.5 inches of rain with hail, Skeleton Canyon Ranch exceeding 8.5 inches since July 1. More rain was forecast for the week.

Target Date Set For Youth Center Opening

Lordsburg prepares to open a youth center in a city owned Main Street building near I 10. Partners Hidalgo County and City of Lordsburg each fund about 6000 dollars while Students Inc funds three staff positions. The project includes a roller rink floor and game area with basketball and table tennis. Police report a busy week with burglaries vandalism larceny aggravated assault false alarms and vehicle recovery.

Police recover 1974 VW near Lordsburg

Lordsburg City Police Officer Dean Hall found a 1974 VW abandoned behind Smith Ford in A local car area. Frank Hood of Lordsburg owned the vehicle and it was recovered with help from Officer Joe Aresti Officer Benny Smith and State Police Officer Dan Harris before the owner reported it stolen.
