Reunion of the Virden Jones family gathers for gala reunion

The Virden Valley hosted a large Jones family reunion last week for Mary wife of Timothy Ge birthday and the orig line. Attendees included Mr and Mrs John B Arizona, E Jones of Mesa, Lorin F Jones of El, Junius sot Virden, Casey Bari Jones of Virden, Jones Lunt of Salt Lake, Albert V Spanish Fork, and relatives from California to Texas. Family records and photos were exchanged and singing and piano pieces enlivened the gathering.

Fire damages home of Marshall Fuller in Lordsburg

Lordsburg volunteers answered three calls in a week. A minor blaze hit a yard at Hidalgo Courts on Saturday. Sunday a small fire near Lordsburg Lumber Co. Tuesday night about 10 reached the home of Marshall Fuller while the family was away at Sherwood Culberson reach. The front room was demolished and the family parakeet died.

Government Plans Buff Colored New Checks with Diagonal Cut

The government introduces buff colored checks with a diagonal corner for use with high speed electronic processing. The green punch card checks will continue, and the new system aims to cut costs by about 2.25 million dollars yearly.

Kreole Boy Scout Troop Tours Southwest on Funded Trip

Troop 231 Kreole Mississippi with 35 scouts and leaders toured southern sites including Carlsbad Caverns Juarez El Paso and Lordsburg. They funded the two week excursion by selling trees and meals and plan next year to raise funds for the National Jamboree destination Grand Canyon Disneyland and LA studios.

The Lordsburg water shortage caused by a broken pump is being addressed with repairs and a new pump installation. By Thursday a replacement will arrive, giving the system two large pumps and one small one to handle emergencies.

New Mexico reports a record unemployment reserve of 35.9 million dollars as of June 30 1956 with 14 000 employers contributing payrolls The fund held in the U S Treasury carries 67 percent of the state's non farm workers coverage and paid 2 168937 in the first half of 1956 across state and federal programs.

The Old Timer's Association and Hidalgo County groups held a July 16 meeting to map the September 20 21 22 23 festival. Activities include an Old Timer's reunion dinner at the American Legion Hall parade on September 21 four rodeo shows four performances and a rodeo queen prize of 875 for expenses to the New Mexico State Fair funded by the Sheriff Posse Hidalgo County Fair Board and Chamber of Commerce.

Highway Act Increases Taxes On Selected Articles

The Highway Revenue Act raises excise taxes on floor stocks and related items. Forms 2265 will be available at the Albuquerque IRS district office for firms with July 1 floor stocks, with a due date of October 15 and payment required. Tax reporting will follow existing methods, using Form 720 for the third quarter of 1956. President Eisenhower signed the measure on June 29 after Congress passed it.
