Mr and Mrs Claude Speer survived a lightning strike while fishing near Alpine Arizona. The blast knocked Mrs Speer from the boat seat while Mr Speer was hurled into the lake. He sustained minor burns and a headache. Two anglers onshore were killed by the same bolt.
The D. P. Lee farm hosted a Sunday rabbit drive drawing about two hundred participants. A second hunt is planned at the George Wright farm in Animas Valley this Sunday afternoon starting at two. County Agent Ed Hitson organized the effort with local farmers to protect cotton crops. Farmers are urged to attend with clubs. farm women to bring cakes and enjoy posthunt refreshments.
A car owned by Doc's Feed and Fuel driven by Harry Dodson of Hanover New Mexico won the 20 lap main event at Silver City on Sunday evening. Mrs Dodson also took first in the same car during Wednesday's July 18 race. The No 3 entry will race at Safford on Sunday July 22.
A local expert shares practical tips for home cooler use. Change cooler pads in early summer and weekly washings with the motor off. Oil the unit 2 to 3 times in summer. Avoid overwatering. have a plumber adjust water and keep dust off pads.
Plans call for work at the Fair Grounds to shape it for the fall fair. A finance committee will contact citizens and businesses to raise funds. Donations of any size will be welcomed and every dollar spent is promised to benefit the county’s agricultural community and its youth.
Hugh B. McKemy aged 47 of El Paso died in a Sunday morning crash on Highway 62 about 40 miles east of El Paso. The vehicle driven by Simon Martinez left the road after a sharp curve and rolled, ejecting McKemy who died at the scene. Funeral services were held at Immaculate Conception Church in El Paso with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. McKemy was father of Mrs. Billy Miller of Lordsburg whose husband is a Miller Chevrolet Company member.
City officials collected a $42.75 contribution for the Hospital Equipment Fund last week. Other donors included Western Star Temple of the Pythian Sisters and Mrs Beulah Coursey, agents of the effort.
The Local Board reminds young men to register upon reaching their 18th birthday. The office at 203 E. Ind Street is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. N. Franklin Davidson serves as Chairman.
The policy allowing examined and acceptable registrants to enlist in their chosen service is extended to August 1 1951. Enlistees must present a signed local board certificate confirming no induction orders. Applies only to immediate active duty enlistments, not reserves or National Guard. Harold Smith of Lordsburg was seriously hurt in a Pecos Texas truck accident on July 12. He sustained internal injuries a broken pelvis and a fractured hip. His parents and sister travel to Pecos to be with him. he faces at least six months in surgery and recovery.
Lordsburg Indians traveled to Hurley with hopes of revenge but were stifled by pitcher Garcia who blanked the Indians after a rough first and final lines. Garcia allowed 12 hits, issued no walks, and struck out six as the Tigers capitalized on five Indian errors and timely hitting. Cy Maldonado led the Indian lineup, though the effort fell short.
Athletic Director Raymond J Prancheau releases the official 1951 schedule with opponents dates and locations. All games start at 8 00 PM except possibly November 12 at Flagstaff Arizona away. New opponent McMurry college joins while St Michael s Santa Fe Sul Ross Fort Bliss are dropped.
