Lordsburg Accepts Short Company Road Offer for Eastside Link
Lordsburg City Council agreed to have the Ernest J. Short Company fund the city’s share and dedicate land for a new access road connecting Highways 70 and 80 on the east side. Final approval rests with the Bureau of Public Roads and a state right of way letter is to be sent.

Animas Welcomes New Deputy Paul Engelbrecht
Hidalgo County Sheriff Gene Moore announced the hiring of Paul Engelbrecht as a fulltime deputy for the Animas Area. Engelbrecht, 42, a former Animas District teacher, will reside in Animas and joins via the Public Employment Program under the Emergency Employment Act with his wife and six children.

Lordsburg Board to Name New Superintendent
Henry Alvarez of the Lordsburg Board of Education said a new superintendent will be announced at a Monday special meeting. The board may interview one more applicant and is considering candidates from Coolidge Arizona and El Paso Texas to fill the post vacated by Dr. James L. Latham whose resignation takes effect July 29.

Peel Resigns from Lordsburg School System
Mrs. Betty Peel announced to the Liberal that she has sent a letter of resignation to the Lordsburg Board of Education after serving as a work study teacher and special education director. She will move to San Antonio to join the Southwest Independent School District as a diagnostician testing and remediating student educational difficulties. Her husband will teach English at the University of Texas in San Antonio.

Paul Gandara, 29, was appointed by Mayor Ted White to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of John Fiie. A Lordsburg native and Wrights Bakery owner, he pledges active service and supports organized growth while addressing roads to Playas and a new link between Highway 70 and Interstate 10. He is married and resides in Lordsburg.

The Lordsburg Board of Education approved bids for school items at the July 15 meeting. De Vac Inc. won on 47 aluminum frame windows at 10,669 dollars for Central Elementary. Cochran Electric bid 264 to install 96 plug wall units. Allied Supply Co. bid 608 for desks chairs and tables. New Mexico School Products Co. won 1,709 for 39 open classroom tables. H E Electric Supply bid 731 for light bulbs. Nearly 2,000 dollars were approved for maintenance supplies from five companies.
