Winds Level Homes as Lordsburg Area S Weather Delivers Damage

High winds Friday dusk caused extensive damage in Glen Acres. Lyman Stough, Lordsburg High School coach, escaped a demolished home as two by fours pierced walls of a mobile home and other houses including David Whipple and Rosie Alba’s structures sustained major harm. Whipple estimated up to 15000 dollars in damage. A Whipple boat is missing. Texas New Mexico Power reported a brief outage in Lordsburg due to a short at a substation, with power restored in about an hour.

Millers Seek Road Agreement in County Meeting

The county commission heard Bill Miller Jr. push for an agreement allowing the Scholles access to the road with stipulations. Marcelo Salas Vargas, 80, died June 29 at Gila Regional Medical Center. Visitation was July 1, with a rosary at St Joseph’s Church and a July 2 funeral Mass. He was a Lordsburg resident born January 16, 1908, and survived by four sons, a daughter, a brother, a sister, seventeen grandchildren, and thirty great grandchildren. Commission actions included a joint power agreement with the City of Lordsburg for prisoner housing, a $10,000 BLM animal-damage contract, continued COG services, and engineering work for Playas Road, with calls to finish the road before traffic use.

Farm Loans May Be Available for Hidalgo Farmers

Senator Pete Domenici announced that the U S Department of Agriculture found Hidalgo County farmers may qualify for low interest loans due to damage to fruit and nut crops from freezes on March 18 and May 3. The aid extends to two Arizona counties declared disaster areas and invites eligible producers to contact their local Farmers Home Administration office for details.

Sixites Classes Hold Second Reunion Here

Lordsburg High School graduates from 1960 to 1969 held their second reunion on July 2 and 3 with about 175 classmates, attendees from the 1950s and 1970s, and families. Registration opened at 10:00 a.m. at the high school as tours and yearbook photo name tags refreshed memories. A dinner dance followed at the National Guard Armory with Siempre providing music and Ramon Sanchez emceeing. Class pictures were taken by Bobby Gonzalez.

Lordsburg Mayor Arthur Clark Smith says two citizen groups met to discuss city projects. New businesses arrive, Special Events Center is halfway done, street paving will start soon, housing rehab continues, and Pyramid Village construction progresses. Citizens are urged to call City Hall with concerns.
