Night Depository Opens At Bank For After Hours Deposits

The bank installs a Mosler night depository in the northeast corner of the lobby on Railroad Street to allow deposits at any time after hours. Depositors use a depository bag with a padlock and two signatures. a bank agent can call and sign for receipt next business day.

Sunday afternoon July 24 at 2 30 Lordsburg will host Columbus New Mexico in a return game. The Indians team will use full gate receipts to aid medical expenses for Raymond Probert who has been ill for weeks.

Deming Youth Drowns in Caballo Reservoir

William Jefferson Sires 20 of Deming drowned July 4 while swimming the Caballo Reservoir. He was swept by undertow and unable to save himself. He was the brother of Mrs A F Bednorz of Lordsburg.

Four Girls Attend Albuquerque Band Camp

Four girls from Lordsburg Pauline Sanchez Myrna Lunt Janice Malott and Lucille Meard traveled to a band camp in Albuquerque at the University. The Band Parents Club funded two scholarships Ada Jean Jackson and Janice Malott. Ada Jean could not attend and Myrna Lunt was chosen as alternate. Sanchez plays trombone Malott and Lunt clarinet and Meard drums. Camp ends July 23 with a planned return on Sunday.

Nearly an inch of rain blessed the Lordsburg area this week with four tenths of an inch Sunday night and a half inch on Wednesday. Temperatures had topped 103 to 106 in the days prior, and the showers brought noticeable relief from the heat.

Edgar Cureton of the C Bar Ranch has been ill in a Los Angeles hospital but is reported improved and able to be discharged. His wife Della, who stayed with him, has now returned home.

Car Thief And Forged Checks Sent To Prison

Sheriff T N Jackson reports two convictions in the District Court. Chester Wright of Big Springs Texas received four to five years for car theft of Mrs Effie Powell of Lordsburg. William Kennedy of Bastrop Louisiana was sentenced to eighteen months to two years for passing bad checks. Both are sent to Santa Fe for confinement.

Williams Faces Murder Charge In District Court Trial

Bill Williams stands trial in the District Court for the murder of Vernon Taylor following an April barroom argument. Judge A W Marshall presides as County Attorney Thomas P Foy leads the prosecution. Williams pleaded not guilty as jury selection began. Another murder case, Curtis C Armstrong, is set for July 27 for the killing of Ruby Cardenas and alleged body burial near White Signal.
