Hidalgo County Clerk Earlene Blakey resigned effective July 31 for personal business reasons. Commissioners Roy Hatch Fausto Noce and Lloyd Payne accepted the resignation and named former clerk Emma Scofield to fill the position. Blakey had taken office seven months ago and had appointed Scofield as deputy.
The Lordsburg City Council planned intensified collection of unpaid business occupation licenses with a April 1 deadline. City Attorney Morris will issue notices, threaten closures for noncompliance, and pursue daily penalties if needed while aiming for fairness. The panel also approved $600,000 in water and sewer bonds and ordered a motorcycle licensing ordinance update to align with state law, including helmet use and eye protection.
Ranchers in Hidalgo County call on County Commissioners and the Sheriff's Department to address livestock deaths and property damage on county and state roads and private lands. They note high speeds and vandalism as causes and welcome recreation but insist on respecting rancher rights. Officials pledge closer road patrols and road blocks to foster cooperation and urge adherence to speed limits and property respect.
Glen Dorsett and the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce board agreed to extend their mutual agreement for another year starting August 1. Dorsett, who began the post a year ago, said year to year terms are common for chamber managers and expressed satisfaction with his role and leadership.
