Miss Imperial Pageant Set for July 17 in Lordsburg

Seventeen contestants vie for the Miss Imperial 400 title at an invitational dinner during the grand opening of the Imperial 400 mote. Entries include Miss Sandra Dunkerson Knights of Pythias and Miss Sally Baker Historical Society among others. Final plans to be announced next week.

Pony Leaguers Fall 6-1 at Bowie in July 4 Game

The all star Pony League squad lost to Bowie 6 to 1 on July 4 with Murray hitting a grand slam in the third inning. Sandlin and Lopez pitched for Lordsburg but Bowie offensive barrage featured two in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the seventh. Transportation was by Winebrenner Moore Sandlin Lopez and Martinez. Bowie to host rematch on Sunday July 16.

Veterans Service Officer to Visit Lordsburg in July

Agapito Torres, New Mexico Veterans Service Officer, will be in Lordsburg at the Department of Public Welfare Office on 112 E Fourth Tuesday July 11 from 9 30 a m to 3 p m to assist those unable to visit his office with veterans benefits and related inquiries.

Lost hunter found after long Hidalgo County search

Dr. Dandis Rust of Las Cruces was located about 11 p.m. Wednesday after going missing Tuesday morning while hunting wild hogs in the southern Hidalgo County. He was found near Lone Tree, five miles east and three miles north of Cloverdale, by Conservation Officer Virgil Jones and J. C. Germany, with help from Hidalgo and Luna County officers and state police.

City Entry in Softball League Wins First Out

The LULAC softballers rallied to beat Millican's Enco Service 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday night. LULAC tallied three hits, two walks and an error for five in the third and two more in the fifth as Lopez limited Banner Mine to one run in the nightcap, and the City nine routed Banner Mine 11-1 with Varela four hits and five RBIs and Diaz three hits and three RBIs.

Annual Barbecue Held By Pythians

The Knights of Pythias held a Fourth of July barbecue at the KP picnic grounds serving over 100 people. Barbecued beef bread beans and coffee were served to friends and families. Cake and soft drinks were sold by the Pythian Sisters and Sunshine Girls. Dick Rice drew the winning ticket for a diamond ring won by Charles Walter. Games and a dunking tank provided additional entertainment.

Local Adult Swimming Lessons Start July 10

Gary Corbell announced that adult swimming lessons will begin Monday July 10 at the Municipal Swimming Pool. He urged interested participants to register early and contact him at the pool.

County 1-H Winners Advance to District Contest

The 1961 County 4-H Clubs contest at the high school crowned junior winners in Clothing Food and General Home Economics with Mary Dallies Deborah Mortensen and others taking top places. Senior winners include Sandra Hatch Linds Payne Mary Austin and more with all seniors advancing to 4-H camp at New Mexico State University in August and juniors heading to the District contest in Truth or Consequences on July 19.

Sheriff On Top Of Pony League Clinches 8-1 Win

The Sheriff's club stayed ahead of the Pony League with an 8-1 victory over LULAGO last Friday. Lopez pitched a near no hitter until the fifth inning when Murray reached on a walk and La Marca doubled to drive him in for LULAC's lone run. Renteria worked hard for LULAC, yielding six safeties but issuing walks. A rematch is set for Monday night July 10.

Moore Keeps Little League Lead With Elks Win

Moore extended the pace of the Little League with a 14-1 win over the Elks behind Mario Ramirez two hits. Banner Mine built a 4-0 lead in the first inning of their Thursday game and rolled to an 11-1 victory with Holguin and Herrera homering for the Miners. Enco Service and Art's Garage produced a lone run on a first inning triple by Orona and a single by Larry Moore. Moore faces Enco Service and Art's Garage again on Monday, July 10.

Summer Band Classes Venture into Vacation Schedule

Summer band classes will vacation starting July 6 and run through July 17. The regular schedule will resume after July 17.

One Dead and Several Injured in Holiday Accidents

A fatality and multiple injuries occurred in three accidents over the long weekend in Hidalgo County area. Marroquin Gustano Reyna, 33, of Los Angeles, died at Hidalgo County Hospital after the car he rode in left the highway west of Lordsburg near the Animas overpass. Reyna’s wife Graciela and Francisco J. Garza, also from Los Angeles, were hospitalized with injuries. State Police Officer Jose Ortega investigated. Additional injuries included Paul R. Gants Jr., 17, severely hurt when his car failed a turn near Lordsburg while returning to Navy duty. he was found unconscious. Teresa Montez Lucero’s car left the Silver City road injuring occupants including Mrs. Lincord. Cause of the first crash remained undetermined.

Lordsburg LULAC Club Attends National Convention

Lordsburg LULAC Club No 356 was well represented at the national convention in Phoenix with 700 delegates from the ladies auxiliary and men in attendance. The group discussed establishing a permanent El Paso records site and cooperation with the Peace Corps. Frank Valdez of San Antonio was elected national president. El Paso will host the 1962 convention. Lordsburg attendees included Frank Elias Manuel Ramirez Nieves Frausto and C Altuna Jr.
