Eastern Marine Construction Executive Visits Hidalgo County

Stuart Prescott, engineering consultant for Eastern Marine Construction Company of Nashua New Hampshire, visited Hidalgo County with Cliff Sanders from Western New Mexico University Small Business Development Center. Prescott toured and discussed state economy after attending an INC convention in Albuquerque. He noted broad New Mexico county representation and strong regional interest. Eastern Marine has grown rapidly, operates in twenty states, and met Governor King during the trip.

A tour of Southwestern New Mexico featured remarks on a two week stay to assess development, including proposals for Elephant Butte. Eastern Marine showed interest in building and financing ventures, with a planned meeting with the Governor after the tour. Separately, Jerry Edward McGhee died June 28 1991 in San Francisco. He was born December 11 1952 in Lordsburg New Mexico and was a Lordsburg High School graduate who attended the University of New Mexico and worked for CBIS Federal in San Francisco. Speeding Fines Raised by Highway Safety Bureau

The Traffic Safety Bureau announced higher speeding fines effective under Senate Bill 360. Fines now range from 31 to 216 dollars based on miles over the limit, with brief 1990 crash and fatality data cited to justify the change and promote a safe Fourth of July.

98th Birthday Open House for Mabel Fisher

Friends gathered at Stylerite on Friday June 28 to honor Mabel Fisher for her 98th birthday to be celebrated July 2, 1991. Hosts included Louise McGhee Ruthe Foxworth Billy Fisher Judy Fisher and other family and friends. Fisher, born in Pottsboro Texas, later ran a hardware store on Motel Drive with her husband E M Fisher.

Protect Your Eyes While Viewing Eclipse

A partial solar eclipse will shade the Southernwestern United States on Thursday July 11 with about 60 percent sun coverage, while Hawaii sees a full eclipse. Ophthalmologist Dr Wayne Fung warns direct viewing can burn the retina and cause permanent vision loss. Safer options include watching on TV or at planetariums. binoculars or telescopes dramatically increase risk. The eclipse lasts about two and a half hours with a crescent sun at maximum, moving along a path from Hawaii to Central America and into Brazil.

New Mexico Association of Counties Elects Leaders at Farmington Meet

At the 55th annual NMAC conference in Farmington on June 11 to 13 Mauro Rico Hidalgo county commissioner was elected President of the Commissioners Affiliate. Sterling Spencer Lincoln County Commissioner was chosen Vice President. Commissioner Rice remains Hidalgo county’s representative on the NMAC Board of Directors and was appointed last year as Vice Chairman of the Legislative Committee.
