Residents faced anxious hours after Ray Harrington, 15, son of Mrs. Alice Harrington, fell into a shaft at the old $5 mine between 5 and 5:30 p.m. He and the Barrick brothers explored the shaft. Ray volunteered to descend when a stone tied to a rope got lodged.
Dr. Cy Ramo head scientist at Hughes Aircraft Co will be guest speaker at a Thursday evening February 12 dinner at Amelia Legion hall. The Legion auxiliary will serve a turkey dinner with Hughes officials attending and attendees from Tucson Safford Silver City Deming expected.
A Hidalgo county district Boy Scout Council reorganization met Tuesday evening with Roland Post of Yucca council directing in the absence of District Chairman Eugene Romney Jr. Officers elected for the year include Wesley Freeburg as organization and extension chairman, Paul Probert advancement chairman, Howard Phillips camping and activities chairman, and Paul Malott public relations. The time and place for the next web meeting will be announced.
The Deming High School basketball team will host the Lordsburg Mavericks on Tuesday night at home after a postponement. The game resumes the county rival matchup with both teams aiming for a win.
Laura Yacamo of Portales earned second chair among 10 bass horn players after auditioning for the All State Chorus and Band. She has over a year on bass horn, previously played clarinet, and more than 10 years of piano study under Mrs Parotti and Mrs May Godfrey. She also sings in the high school chorus and plays with the Silver City Symphony.
The high school PTSA will hold a regular meeting Monday February 2 at 7 30 PM in the school building. Parents and students are urged to attend with a Founders Day and Patriotic program and a social hour to follow. Wesley Freeburg will speak and Miss Royce Balch’s class will present a skit. Refreshments provided by the Sophomore class led by Mrs. Virgil Craddock.
New traffic rules on Shakespeare and Pyramid streets restrict traffic to northbound on Shakespeare and southbound on Pyramid between Railroad Ave and 2nd Street. Meter parking is allowed on the appropriate right side, with commercial vehicles allowed free loading and unloading. Signs mark the directions and police urge public cooperation as enforcement will begin once people adjust.
The Lordsburg Liberal highlights the Coton Caravan program aimed at Hidalgo County cotton farmers. It urges local growers to read the issue for details and enrollment information.
Six candidates have filed to run for three seats on the Lordsburg Municipal School Board. Election day is Tuesday February 3 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall. Three members will be chosen two for six year terms and one for four years to fill a resignation vacancy. Only registered voters may vote.
Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce and merchants announce a Cotton Caravan program on Thursday February 19 featuring a fashion show cotton display a free barbecue for Hidalgo county cotton farmers and their families free movie tickets for farmer children and outreach by Hidalgo County Agent Ed Hitson with New Mexico State College specialists.
The March of Dimes drive ends this week with a Mother's March on Thursday evening January 29 from 7 to 8 PM. House to house solicitation will occur and two dances on Saturday January 31. One dance at the American Legion hall and one at La Fiesta. Public urged to give generously to the Mother’s March and support the dances.
A meeting for adults interested in taking a typing course will be held Tuesday February 3 at 7 30 p m in the high school typing room. A group will be formed for a typing class and those unable to attend may enter by contacting Miss Della Faye Holland at 371. spaces are limited.
Miss Sergia Fries the high school home economics teacher will host ten adult sewing lessons starting February 3 at 6 p m in the home economics lounge. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 7 30 to 9 30 pm and will run until March 12 with enrollment limited to twelve. Open to anyone interested in cotton spring clothing.
