The voluntary rate reduction by Community Service Company cuts annual bills by about 18000 for Lordsburg residents and businesses. Commercial rates drop 11.4 percent on average with brackets up to 20 percent, while residential rates average 7.4 percent and reach 17 percent for large users.
Lordsburg Methodist Church hosted the Nazarene Missionary Society zone meeting on January 11 with 651 members present from Deming Hot Spring and Burley. Various officers spoke, reports were read, and visiting pastors were welcomed. next zone meeting will be in Deming on April 11.
Pastor Paul H. Elmore hosts a day school event at 10 a.m. with worship at 11 a.m. The group meets again in the evening at 6:30 p.m. with service at 7:30 p.m. The Construction essay and a study course are announced for Wednesday night.
Church schedule lists morning and evening services with topics on conversion and doctrinal preaching. January 28 and February 4 attract study on conversion, doctrine, and congregational joining.

Mrs H E Scofield president of the Business and Professional Woman’s Club urges fraternal officers to rally members for accurate census taking.
Rainbow Girls offer tickets to the President's Ball events in Lordsburg honoring the President's birthday. An Old Time Dance at K P Hall and a modern dance at La Fiesta Club are set for January 27 with prices 1.00 per couple and 1.50 per couple respectively. Proceeds support infantile paralysis funds in Hidalgo County.
Friends mourn the death of J. M. Jordan proprietor of the Lordsburg Wrecking Company who died early Wednesday after a short life at 31. He leaves a wife and son, his mother Mrs Dora B. Anderson, brother F. M. Jordan, half sister Miss Annabel Jordan and many friends. Funeral services set for Friday at Heather Funeral Home at two o'clock with Rev. Bryan Hall officiating.
The Wednesday Bridge Club gathered at the home of Mrs. C. BR. Austin for an one o'clock luncheon followed by an afternoon of bridge. Attendees included Mesdames S. FE. Allen R. E. Buvens Jack Clark Nat Gammon Harold Rolfe Frank Winters and Robert Prugle.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo library announces a forthcoming social event to be held within the library grounds near the courthouse yard. The library board promises future notices on the Liberal front page and hints at a free will fee with more details to come.
J R Holder of Pleasanton Texas died at his home January 2. His daughter Mrs W L Mc Means and her husband attended the funeral in Pleasanton.
Our veteran miner and prospector Frank Cline is seriously ill at his home on High Street. His many friends hope for his quick recovery.
Hidalgo County schools expand bus service under County Superintendent Agnes Edington. Twelve buses transport 129 children across distant districts with long daily routes and early starts.
Fulton of Denver a famed racehorse owner visited Hidalgo Courts this week and noted in the Chamber of Commerce memorandum that only Portland Oregon Lordsburg New Mexico and Denver Colorado offer truly pure drinking water. He often travels with her husband on tours. They were impressed by Lordsburg.
Mr. and Mrs. Price Steel and Mr and Mrs Jim Maddox plus Mrs Price Maddox from Sweetwater Texas spent several days with Mr and Mrs Holmes Maddox. On Sunday evening the Maddoxes entertained at dinner at the Hidalgo Grill their Texas relatives.
Our Johnny owned by Dee Hall and RK M Reynolds finished third in the final race at Phoenix Saturday. The horse will race at Phoenix today and again Sunday.
The New Mexico Mine and Prospector Association calls for broad support from all mining related people and business leaders. It highlights Lordsburg Hidalgo County benefits, Banner Mine payrolls of about 23 000 dollars monthly plus similar in supplies, and urges low taxes to sustain mining jobs and state prosperity.
Past Matrons of the Eastern Star met Friday January 12 at Mrs Anna Chase home with Mrs Luella Clark as co host. Attendees included Mesdames Myrtle Augustine Grace Conner Martha Fuller Maude Green Annie Mc Leay Emma Muir Cordelia Parker Jennie Gass Addie Trimble and Olivia Wells. Refreshments crab meat salad pickles biscuits marmalade tea and coffee were served.
Mrs R B Ownby and Mrs W P Hill co hosted a one o clock luncheon for the N and T Club on Tuesday January 16. Members present included Mesdames Clark Conner Green Fuller Hall Holliday Jones McInnis Seco field and Trimble with guests Mrs Oxshear Poindexter Herdman and Mears.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Day and daughter Ann arrived from the ranch on Wednesday. They left youngest son Alan to tend the stock, a duty he has shouldered since November 11 and making him the sole grandson on both sides of the family.
The Las Cruces Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma invites Silver City Deming Lordsburg and Alamogordo Chapters to a luncheon at El Molino at 12:30 on Saturday January 90. After the luncheon initiation services will be held.
The Lordsburg Business and Professional Women's Club met Monday January 16 at Mrs. Emma Scofield’s home. National Field Representative Ruth Melnnis will address members January 27 in Lordsburg, with district convention in Bilver City on February 28 featuring Mrs. Melania as guest speaker. Initiation of new members set for February under Legislative Committee chaired by Mrs. Harriet Howard.
The Wednesday Sewing Club gathered at Mrs. Robert Pierce’s home with Mesdames W. Mearns, Harry Gale, P. M. Chase, T BR Taggart, Glenn Moses, Tom Mayfield, Freeman McWhorter and Miss Ima Fairly. Refreshments included cookies, fruit jello with whipped cream and coffee. The next meeting will be at Mrs. L. B. Robinson’s home on Wednesday.
Charles Gallagher, a young concert pianist, will perform January 22 at the High School as part of the Tri-Arts Series. This marks his third Southwest tour in demand with a program designed to engage both young and old audiences.

At a public installation Monday evening January 16, Rainbow Girls of the local assembly installed officers for the new term. Worthy Advisor Dorothy McInnis and other officers including Betty Been Pauline Wright Olive Ann Wright and Anna Beth Ewing were installed with Edith White and Florence Gwartney assisting as officers. Miss Mary Rouse received a Past Worthy Advisor pin from Betty Been and refreshments followed for officers and guests.
The Lordsburg Woman's Club held its regular meeting January 15 at the Club House. Vice-president Mrs L B Robinson presided in place of the ill president Mrs W C Mearns. Mrs W N Kirkpatric was named corresponding secretary to fill the Trev or McNutt term. Dr R E Vinson reviewed Emile by Rousseau before 24 members. Guest Mrs Herdman of Silver City attended. Donald Johnson of Community Public Service Co is hospitalized with flu.
The Committee for Hidalgo County contributed $25 toward buying an iron lung, bringing the hospital at Hot Springs to two units the only ones in the state. They helped an adult access orthopedic care, and a small balance remains for braces and medical aid for infants with paralysis.
Lordsburg reports heavy winter tourist traffic with visitors from nearly every state. Chamber of Commerce records show days with four or five states represented and travelers arriving from Alaska, Honolulu, England and Sweden. Many tourists make repeated trips, with some sixth or tenth visits, always stopping in Lordsburg.
Mary Lou Brown celebrated her fifth birthday at her parents home. Guests enjoyed cafe style refreshments and a miniature fish pond prize game. Attendees included Gloria Gass Barbara Jean Mearns Patsy Crouch Mortal Knowles Sherrill Hill Mabel and Jimmy Brown Dorothy Birdwell Mary Jane Waltham Joan Ella and Mary Lou Brown.
Mr and Mrs Cal Atkinson announce the birth of a son at DeMees Hospital on January 7 1940. The baby weighing 8 pounds 6½ ounces is named for J M Dorrance Dorrance Robert Atkinson. The family will live with grandparents FE J Wood for now.
The Liberal announces it cannot read minds and invites readers to call 35 44 141 or 112 to publish news. Listeners are urged to report new babies guests abroad travel, new houses, and other items for weekly publication. The paper emphasizes editors will publish all readable news promptly.
