Hidalgo County commissioners on Tuesday night endorsed the president’s action in the Persian Gulf and voted to begin all future meetings with the Pledge of Allegiance, signaling unity and patriotism in local government sessions.
Lordsburg City Council approved a nine holiday schedule for city employees and a one year cafeteria plan contract for Estell Bustos. Thirteen employees joined the plan with thirteen non participants and eleven more to contact. The meeting also featured bids for two V6 AVC trucks and a street repair request on Collins Drive.
The City of Lordsburg warns residents that disposing solid waste on Main Street near the city pound is illegal under New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board rules. Violations carry civil penalties up to 5000 per day. The only approved disposal site is on West A Street.
Lordsburg School District Superintendent Phil DeFoor told the board on January 3 that a December weekend theft in the district parking lot included gasoline from activity buses and tools from maintenance vehicles. A full report was filed with the local police. no solution yet. DeFoor also reviewed ongoing and upcoming maintenance projects across campuses and facilities.
Roy Kerr died Saturday January 12 and funeral services are pending at Baca's Funeral Chapel. The Board accepted the resignation of Industrial Arts Instructor Frank Moreno. DeFoor recommended waiving the 30 day notice making Moreno's resignation effective December 21. Gayla Liles was recommended and hired as Elementary Guidance Counselor starting January. The board took no action on the proposed state mili levy and asked for more information.

A joint statement by Lordsburg National Guard personnel David Maez Hector Vanegas and Phillip Hickson says the local unit has not been called up. Hickson noted many calls from residents about the status while asserting operations are proceeding as normal.
The Lordsburg Lions Club at their noon meeting Tuesday unanimously voted their support for the troops in the Persian Gulf.
Hidalgo County Ambulance offers a basic First Responders course to train citizens and officials in life saving at accident scenes. The 40 hour program runs January 21 to February 1, 1991, evenings, focusing on airway, CPR, bleeding control, wound care, spinal stabilization, and splinting until rescue units arrive.
