County Commissioners Resume Playas Road Project Action

County leaders agreed to move forward on the Playas Road after about a year of study. Three viewers will be named to inspect the proposed area and surveys will determine if condemnation is necessary.

Bidding Deadline Extended for Fieldhouse Phase One

Lordsburg officials extended the bid deadline for the Fieldhouse completion to January 28 1988 with bids opened January 27 in City Council Chambers. A special meeting will address dispensation of qualifying bids while the commission weighs a county tax increase for indigent care and law enforcement. The panel also plans PERA retirement talks and approved road work equipment purchases and a dental office use.

CPR Class Announced At Ambulance Station

W. L. Sanders announces a public CPR class at the Ambulance Station at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday January 16. The fee is five dollars per person.

New Mexico 1987 Vehicle Crashes Fatalities Reach 567

The state Traffic Safety Bureau reports 567 motor vehicle crash deaths in 1987, up 68 from 1986 and the highest since 1982’s 577. Alcohol was a factor in 63 percent of deaths, and only 12 percent of the deceased wore seat belts.

Routine Marijuana Smuggling Net Reported at Lordsburg Checkpoint

A routine traffic checkpoint netted 2142 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of 1.7 million dollars. The Phoenix bound pickup and U Haul trailer were stopped by Border Patrolmen Rowdy Adams Hector Lara and Sgt. Robert Coon. About 300 pounds in the pickup and 1800 pounds in the trailer were found. Driver Dwaine Solano said he was paid to transport the drugs. he was jailed by federal agents.

City Council Grants Extra Week for Field House Bids

Mayor Clark Smith asked the Lordsburg City Council to extend bid submission by one week so contractors can secure bonds for the Field House Project. The panel agreed to delay acceptance to widen the bidding pool. new meeting set for January 27 at City Chambers. A liquor license transfer application for the Franklin Hood license was filed by Inez Hood.

Services Held Tuesday For Bruce Allen Smith

Bruce Allen Smith 46 died January 7 at his Lordsburg home. Born July 19, 1941, he lived in Lordsburg all his life, member of Elks Lodge, retired from New Mexico State Highway Department. Survived by four brothers, visitation January 11, funeral January 12 at Bacas Heather Chapel, Mt. View Cemetery interment. Pallbearers listed, honorary bearers Michael and Howard Smith.

Lordsburg Jaycees Schedule Initial 1988 Meeting

The Lordsburg Jaycees will hold their first 1988 meeting Friday at noon at the El Charro Restaurant, led by President John Kreibel.
