In Lordsburg District 4-H clubs gathered on July 6 as the Coalition of Counties held a meeting in Reserve. A Tucson man was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping in the area. Railroad Days attracted visitors from Indinapolis Indiana Bozeman Montana and Baton Rouge.
The Fourth Annual Maverick Stampede starts Thursday in Lordsburg with eight teams Academia Juarez Bisbee Animas Dexter Cliff Hatch Jemez Valley and host Lordsburg. Opening on Thursday Jan 10 Academia Juarez vs Bisbee at 3 30 PM. Bracket on page 7.
Francisco "Kiki" Chaires is named Chairman at the first regular County Commission meeting of the year. The board reappoints Jake McCarty as Road Supervisor and Mike Coogan as Ambulance Supervisor. Ordinance 91-1 extends a landfill moratorium. SpectraComm seeks public input on cableless service for Animas with $250 decoder and $25 monthly fee for 8–12 channels. A special meeting is set for January 15 at 5:00.
The City Corner urges business owners and residents to wrap wet or decaying material before placing it in city containers and to disassemble cardboard boxes beside the container. The note cites pest hazards and unsafe conditions for workers and invites comments to The City Corner, 206 So. Main Street, Lordsburg, New Mexico 88045.
Lordsburg District runs three candidates for three seats with incumbents Placencia and Estrada unopposed while Williams retires leaving one seat open. Write-in Pam Sanders filed for position one on January 3. Animal District sees seven candidates for three vacancies with Richardson Willis for position one Merrell Keeler for District Two and Medina challenged by George and Bittle in District Three. Elections set for February 5 with four year terms.
The Ministerial Alliance of Lordsburg invites all to join prayers for Middle East peace and Desert Shield troops at First United Methodist Church Lordsburg 7:00 p.m. January 14. If peace is reached earlier a praise and thanksgiving service will replace the prayer service.
Nora N. Lemons 87 of Lordsburg died January 6 at Gila Regional Medical Center Silver City. Visitation January 10 from 8 to 10 at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel with the service at 10. Interment Mountain View Cemetery. Born May 17 1903 in Phillipsburg Missouri she was a waitress and a Church of Christ member. Survived by two sons Vernon Dye Lordsburg John M Elms Portland Oregon a daughter Dorothy Jean Fontana California a sister Ruth Haney Bisbee Arizona and three grandchildren Pallbearers Vernon Dye John Elms George Stone Fred Ewing Van Coleman Curtis Vinson Honorary Bearers Orville Jean John Michael Elms Billy Beach J D Atkinson. Bacas Funeral Chapels in charge of arrangements.
The 1991 Lordsburg High School Science Fair will be held January 17 and 18 in the High School library. Students from all four grades will showcase projects that reflect dedicated effort and time. Public viewing is scheduled for Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
