Legion Auxiliary Meets at Legion Hall for January Session
The American Legion Auxiliary held its regular meeting at the Legion hall on January 5 with a buffet supper by Ruby Warren. The membership quota nears completion as plans are made to urge unpaid members to settle in January. Mrs. C. C. Fuller reported on the Past Presidents parley and officers were discussed for a semiannual rotation. Current officers are Mrs. Fuller president, Mrs. Elizabeth Scofield vice president, and Mrs. Alma Carson secretary-treasurer. The unit backs Elizabeth Winters for State Auxiliary president, noting her prior role as first vice president. Letters from Ft. Bayard Veterans Hospital thank the unit and Winters for support to veterans. With Wesley Freeburg’s approval, eight copies of Key to Peace by Clar- are mentioned for distribution.

Mrs. G Porter Dies After City Motor Crash
Mrs. Gertude Porter of this city died after a two car collision on highway 80 eight miles west of town near Brickey station. The accident involved a 1950 Tudor Chevrolet driven east by J R Hunt of Tatum New Mexico and a Studebaker pickup driven west by Levian Kerr of this city. Porter passenger in Kerr’s vehicle died Sunday of injuries. Kerr hospitalized with bruises. Hunt and wife minor injuries. infant uninjured. Vehicles totaled. Sheriff Dick Richards investigated.

Sun Princess Anna Martin Tops Southwestern Sun Carnival
Miss Anna Irene Martin served as Lordburg's Sun Princess at the Southwestern Sun Carnival weekend events. Registrations and an instruction meeting opened Friday at the Cortez hotel, followed by a Chamber of Commerce luncheon and a Fort Bliss dance in honor of the officers wives duchess. The Queen's court gathered Saturday morning at Hotel Cortez to practice for the coronation, which occurred Saturday evening, with ten duchesses and forty Sun Princesses in attendance.

Quintana Killed in Korea, Boxing Champion Remembered
Hilberto Quintana 22, former Lordsburg resident and Clifton native, reported killed in Korea on December 17 by the War Department. Arizona lightweight boxing champion and Western New Mexico Golden Gloves holder, he also earned sportsmanship and outstanding fighter honors in Silver City.

Lack of Water Closes Animas School
The Animas school did not open on time Monday January 5 due to a water shortage. A new pump was installed but the well ran dry. Superintendent Hatch arranged temporary water hauling and the school reopened on Wednesday while a new well is drilled for a permanent supply.
