The Maverick boys basketball schedule lists a home event against Douglas on Friday January 7 starting at 3 30 p m. The lineup includes ninth grade junior varsity and varsity teams competing at the Douglas venue.
Principal Phil DeFoor met NM Activities Association and Hatch High representatives over last season’s Lordsburg Hatch football melee. Wells’s report rated Lordsburg satisfactory in five areas. Hatch earned unsatisfactory in three. Forfeiture considered but not pursued. Lordsburg coaches urged restraint. Hatch letter criticized. Board discussed budget, election officials, surplus desks donation, and state accreditation visit set for Jan 18–19.
The Hidalgo Board of Commissioners met in a Tuesday special session to set Joe Croom as chairman for eight months and to open a bid for workers compensation. They named Western Bank as county funds depository and approved a sheriff budget line item change. Executive session addressed House Bill 13 salaries of elected officials and county manager appointment, with decisions due at the next meeting.
Frost and fog covered Lordsburg on Tuesday morning with a striking display of Jack Frost’s patterns on trees and windows while a light snow blitz spared the city. Travelers filled inns as residents noted measured snowfall in micro inches, contradicting a Playas resident who reported inches and tons.
The 1982 economy hurt city finances with job losses and business closures reducing gross receipts taxes. The administration did not lay off workers but froze raises and hired temporarily. Officials sworn in included Commissioner Joe Croom Treasurer June Moore Assessor Olivia Ramirez Probate Judge Ena Mitchell Clerk Margaret Coogan Sheriff Bill Darnell and Commissioners Bill Collins and Kiki Chaires.
