Virden Extension Club Receives Encyclopedias

The Virden Extension Club received encyclopedias from the Extension Library Service. Joyce Wilson delivered the books from Silver City New Mexico and several other titles were requested by residents. The library will be closed until the afternoon of January 3 for book checkouts and returns.

Debra Kirby Hosts Brownie Troop 2 Christmas Party

Debra Kirby hosted Brownie Troop No 2 at Mrs. Jack Morgan's home for a Christmas party. The girls played musical bingo with Alice Allen and Debra Kirby winning. Each girl received favors of little items and suckers after an exchange of gifts.

Elks Distribute 32 Christmas Baskets to Needy Families

The Elks Christmas Basket program distributed 32 baskets to needy families on December 24. The Telephone Company funded one basket. the lodge, aided by donations, provided the rest. Douglas Strain, Elks chairman, said lists from churches doctors and welfare agencies guided recipient selection. Baskets held hams beans potatoes onions canned goods and toys from Pixie Brownie troop and Elks.

Brownie Troop 7 Christmas Party At Leader Home

Brownie Troop No 7 held its Christmas party December 16 at leader Mrs John Kirby's home. The girls sang carols with Patsy Blanton at the piano and received scrapbooks and candy canes. Helpers Mrs Ed Hitson and Mrs Jesus Estrada served jello sandwiches punch and cake to members including Alice Alvarez Deirde Estrada Tommy Nard Mary Payne Vicky Ramirez Joanne Smith Judy Simmons Karen Staub Michael Wood. Guests Shirley Hitson and Debra Kirby attended.

Church of Christ Welcomes New Minister M R Lee

SPECIAL TO THE LIBERAL M R Lee will assume duties at the Church of Christ 308 East Fifth Street on Sunday Jan 4. He and his family move from Whiteface Texas and previously preached at Capitan and Mayhill New Mexico. The Lees have three boys aged two three and nine. The church had no regular minister since October when R E Griffith left for health reasons. The Griffiths had been in Lordsburg over two years. The congregation looks forward to a fruitful association with the Lees.

Birth of the Savior Depicted at LDS Church

A Christmas program at the LDS Church featured about 30 primary children under leaders Mrs. Margaret Speer Mrs. Elva Shumway and Mrs. Myrna Lunt. Special readings were given by Paul Speer Loren Kennett and Carol Shumyer. Santa Claus arrived with goodies for 75 attendees.

Pushbutton Railroading To Control Hundreds Of Miles

Southern Pacific plans a 3 million extension of its centralized traffic control system from Lordsburg to El Paso, doubling capacity on 264 miles across Arizona and New Mexico. The project adds 140 miles of new CTC and lengthens 15 sidings by 11 miles, with completion targeted for next October. SP president D. J. Russell described CTC as pushbutton railroading enabling a single dispatcher to manage trains over long distances.

Telephone Company Christmas Luncheon in Lordsburg

Mountain States Tel. and Tel. employees in Lordsburg held a cafeteria style Christmas party with a luncheon and gift exchange. The drive raised boxes of food and toys for the needy, with attendees including Mrs Allene Strain Ella Mae Allen Orpha Nally Mary Lou Brande mueth Ward Dale and others. Velma Cox was ill and did not attend.

Rodolfo Chavez Elected President of Moctezuma Club

Rodolfo Chavez was elected president of the Moctezuma Club at the officers election tied to their Christmas party at The American Legion Hall on December 21. Other officers include Ray Saucedo vice president Lupe P. Rivera secretary Petra Estrada assistant secretary and Louis Diaz treasurer. Board members for two years are Tiburcio Ramirez Jose A. Lopez Arturo Talavera and Lalo Talavera. The La Fiesta Club hosted the Christmas Eve dance sponsored by the Moctezuma Club and a $100 prize was won by James W. Moore during intermission.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boyas recently moved to Lordsburg from Los Angeles and spent the holidays with her son and family in Mobile Alabama. Mrs. Boyas is the daughter of Mrs. Emma Culp and sister to Mrs. Ted White and Mrs. John Kirby.

Hidako County welcomes new county officials as the courthouse opens. Adelaide Kerr begins a two year term as county school superintendent. Mecia Motley becomes probate judge. Sven O Thvggerson Albert Hill and Garland Johnson assume county commissioner roles. Clara Brown begins her term as county assessor. Hugh Pace starts as sheriff. John R Robertson and Ena Mitchell begin second terms as clerk and treasurer. Norman Hodges starts his second term as district attorney and H Vearle Payne begins his first elected term as district judge.

Arbie Mobley Wins Bunco At VFW Christmas Party

The Bataan Auxiliary of Lordsburg Post VFW No. 3099 held its Christmas party on December 22 at Mrs. Cora Simonton's home. Arbie Mobley won high score in bunco with Mrs. Hannah Jones as low winner. Members exchanged gifts from a yucca stalk tree and enjoyed coffee and fruit cake.

Local Baptist Pastor Moving to Arizona

The Rev. Dan Stringer Jr resigned as pastor of the First Baptist Church on Dec 28, effective Jan 13. He and his family will move to Buckeye Arizona where he will serve as pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church.

Service Station Attendant Fined for Foul Language Incident

Leon Cowley, attendant at Price's Texaco, pleaded guilty to using profane language and was fined $25 by Police Judge C L Brown after an altercation sparked when Special Traffic Officer De La Garza cited a speeding driver in the station driveway. Mayor Alan A Koff filed the charge.

Lion Caught on Ranch In 1958 Three Lions Trapped

Mr and Mrs P M Ewing trapped a large eight and a half foot lion on their ranch after loosing several goats to a marauder. Mrs Ewing said it was the largest of three lions caught in 1958.
