New Mexico Western Basketball Tournament Set for January 9 1953
The fourth annual New Mexico Western Basketball Tournament will be held in Silver City on January 9 and 10, 1953 with six teams: Cliff, Hurley, Virden, Deming, Lordsburg, and Western. The opening games include Western Colts vs Cliff Cowboys at 7:00 PM and Lordsburg Mavericks vs Deming Wildcats at 6:40 PM. Saturday schedule features winners facing Hurley and Lordsburg-Deming winner against second seed.

Hidalgo County is fourth in New Mexico in tax collections, per a report to county treasurer Damon Dunagan from the Taxpayers Association of New Mexico. As of June 30, 1952, statewide 1951 taxes uncollected totaled $953,221.85. total 1951 collections are expected to reach about 97 percent by December 31, 1952.

Leo J. Kenney, 58, of Mankato Minnesota, died suddenly about 5 30 a m Tuesday Dec 30 at the Up To Date cafe where he and his wife were stopping for coffee. The body was shipped to Minnesota for funeral and burial services.
