State Police Investigate Three Highway Wrecks
New Mexico state police investigated three highway wrecks last week on Highways 70 and east of Lordsburg. In the first, December 19, Brajkovich of San Antonio Texas was injured when his 49 Dodge was toppled after a passing maneuver. Mrs Brajkovich and her mother in law Mrs Pearl Dan suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized. The other two crashes occurred December 21 including a tire blowout near Moonatchie New Jersey and a trailer jackknife fire. Gale Dick of Victoria Texas was the driver in the third wreck which overturned and injured three passengers.

Lawrence Home Takes 1st Place Lighting Contest
On Christmas Eve the lighting awards were announced with Miss Mia Burke of Clinton Iowa as judge. She toured Lordsburg with John Anson Leo Cohen and Marguerite Codding to view the illuminated homes and awarded first prize to the Lawrence home on South Shaker Street, a blue ribbon outside. Second and third prizes went to Mr and Mrs H Bryant and Mr Jack Spencer. Thirteen merit awards were given for outside lights to homes including Padilla Carson Speer Huckabay Cochran Moreno Recodo Wright Scott Kimbley Poin ter Anson and Cohen.

Local youth dies after hunting accident in city dump grounds
Thirteen year old Ramon Ornelas died at Hidalgo County Hospital after Urbano Ornelas accidentally discharged a rifle while the two brothers and another boy hunted at the city dump grounds. Ramon, born November 30, 1940 in Morenci Arizona, was the son of Jesus Rosales and Urbano Ornelas. Funeral services were held at St Joseph's Church and burial followed at Shakespeare Cemetery with Heather Funeral Home in charge.

S. P. Steam Whistle To Blow Last Time Midnight On The 31st
The old Southern Pacific steam whistle atop the power house on the north side of the railroad tracks will blow for the last time at midnight Thursday December 31. In use since the 1880s it summoned the fire department, marked work periods and special events, and signaled wrecks and air raids. Dismantling will end Lordsburg’s steam era early next year.

Local Auto Driver Involved In Car Accident
A collision near Lordsburg at about 10 o clock Wednesday morning damaged two cars. Joe Madrid fifteen of Lordsburg was turning into his filling station when James Shepherd of Houston Texas rammed into him. Police Chief Lalo Sanchez reported both vehicles were westbound on Highway 70 80. Madrid slowed to turn left and Shepherd attempted to pass thinking Madrid would stop. No injuries were reported.

Miss Mary Lu Brown, this year’s Sun Princess, was chosen as one of three Queen’s Court girls to appear on the Southwestern Sun Carnival Television Program on KTSM-TV at 6:30 PM Monday. The program outlined Court activities and first functions, giving Lordsburg a boost. attendees from town praised the clear reception.

Hospital To Lose Head Superintendent On January 1st
Hidalgo County Hospital will lose its head superintendent on January 1 when Mrs. R. B. Rice leaves to become head nurse for Dr. J. H Baxter. Mrs. Rice came to the hospital five years ago and helped out for two weeks before staying full time. She recalls the Chamber of Commerce drive that raised over ten thousand dollars for new equipment, including a Ray Machine and operating table, and the donated oxygen tent from Dr. DeMoss. She plans a change of atmosphere after five years and is a graduate of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Phoenix.

Petee the Hidalgo Hospital Parakeet Dies After Christmas Escape
Petee the blue parakeet owned by the Rice family at Hidalgo County Hospital died after escaping during Christmas activities. He returned home, caught a cold in the cold air, and died at 2:00 AM on December 30. Petee entertained patients and brightened the days of those confined to bed, a rare mascot the hospital may not see again.
