Reports say two men received burns with one covering a larger area though both are under hospital care. Attending physicians estimate two to three weeks to gauge burn extent and indicate a hospital stay of similar length. Family notes Grant’s injuries may be broader than Peterson’s.
The Band Parents Club thanks Lords citizens for cooperation at last evenings auction. Special thanks to Jennings the auctioneer and Roger Rand and his band for their assistance. Monies from the sale will help the 72 piece band travel to Tucson for two days in the upcoming meet.
Miss Sue Freeburg named Miss YWA for South Baptist Association attends the state Young Women's Houseparty at First Church Hobbs in February. She is accompanied by Dan Stringer Jr and a total of 11 young women from Southwestern Baptist. Also represented are Sil ae Santa Rita Central and other groups.
The New Mexico School for the Deaf will stage a demonstration in Lordsburg on March 10 and 11. Five or six children, a teacher and a speaker will present teaching methods for deaf and hard of hearing students at the PTA event and a Lions Club briefing. Host families are sought for visiting children, with contact via Mrs. June Hill.
National Future Farmers of America Week closes tomorrow with school activities to spotlight the organization. Animal chapter lists 25 members and officers led by Forrest Hall as president, Billy Veck vice president, Clyde Yarbrough treasurer, Erwin Underwood secretary, Bill Miller reporter, Hugh Peterson sentinel.
Troop 122 held a pot luck dinner at the Elks Lodge to mark Boy Scout Week on February 17. After a candlelight opening, advances were awarded to several scouts, including a First Class rank for Kirke E. Johnson, with badges for swimming, camping, and repairs. Jack Dyer of the U S Geological Survey provided a slide program of Alaska.
A 22 member Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce group entertained 17 Lordsburg local business men at Hotel Hidalgo breakfast. The Duke City visitors toured the area to foster better understanding among communities with Lordsburg Chamber president Jack Morgan presiding and Bob King of Albuquerque chamber introducing the idea of inter-city visits.
The Rober Taper Rebekah Lodge No. 19 in Bayard hosted a banquet for Sybil Dickerson of Fair Acres New Mexico state Rebekah president. The event honored Pearl Stevenson and featured a “This Is Your Life” skit and floral gifts. The group donated 300 to the March of Dimes and welcomed Garland Burchfield and other attendees.
Alan A. Koff told the Liberal by telephone on Tuesday he will run for mayor in the April city election. He has previously sought the post in 1950 1952 and two years ago, losing each time. Filing deadline is 12 noon March 1. as of Thursday afternoon no candidates had filed.
State Police official warns car owners that 1958 license tags must be displayed by March 2. Joe Rusland urged timely compliance to avoid penalties.
Keith Morris will represent Lordsburg High School and the American Legion in the national Oratorical Contest. He will compete Monday night in Silver City with other district finalists for top scholarships.
Homer Brooks reports Heart Fund drive totals reaching 239.95 with 85.00 from Beta Sigma Phi Heart Sunday. donors include First National Bank 10.00 Community Public Service 10.00 Bel Shore Motel 10.00 Up-To-Date Grocery 10.00 and many individuals and local businesses supporting the campaign before March 7.
Two teenage girls from Lovington New Mexico traveling in a stolen auto were arrested Sunday afternoon in Lordsburg and handed to FBI agents. Glenda Joyce Jackson and Peggy Cox admitted passing bad checks in Las Cruces and Deming. The car was stolen in Lovington and the offenses include transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines under the Dyer Act.
Ralph Witte, former Miller Chevrolet mechanic, was found in El Frida Arizona by Hidalgo County sheriff's office and picked up by Arizona officers. He allegedly took tools from Miller's before leaving and shipped a box to FBI Frida. Tools were recovered and returned. Witte, a Navy deserter, was turned over to military authorities at Ft Huachuca.
