Marvin and Ruby Vaughan escorted to cell in Hidalgo County jail by Sheriff Richards. Marvin is handcuffed with cuffs attached to a heavy belt around his waist as Sheriff Richards and his wife drive the Vaughans from Midland, Texas.
Preliminary hearing looms as Sheriff in Midland reports locating a body near a highway after a two day land and air search. The accused pair face first degree murder charges with ongoing questioning by state authorities and discharge of memories by one suspect.
A revised notice of cotton allotment will be mailed to each cotton producer within the next few days. The revised allotments use the 65-40-40 provision based on the 1951 52 53 averages or the highest planted year, not exceeding 40 percent of total tilled land. Hidalgo County received 163 acres from the unallocated reserve and will be distributed per Instructions Committee.
A speech clinic and seminar was held at Lordsburg High School Auditorium for Lordsburg and Hidalgo County teachers. About 69 attendees watched two therapists from the New Mexico Society for Crippled Children, Inc. demonstrate speech and hearing topics using a film and live demonstrations by grade school boys with speech handicaps.
The Cub Scouts Of the BSA celebrated the Scout birthday week with their annual blue and gold banquet Friday evening at the Legion hall. Den rooms featured Liberty Bell, Scout doll, mountains symbolizing the cubbing trail, and Statue of Liberty. About 125 attendees shared spaghetti hot rolls tossed salad and birthday cake. Neil
Captain Bradford of the New Mexico State Police warns owners of cars and trucks to buy 1954 license plates this week. All vehicles must display new plates by Monday March 1 or face a daily penalty plus 15 percent of the due amount. No further warnings will be given.
The City of Lordsburg decorated with banners and cotton bales for Cotton Day. A parade led by the high school band followed by registration for 102 farmers and 22 children at Elke hall. Free candy for children and a matinee at Place Theatre. Welcome by Jack Morgan and program changes due to illness.
The Boy Scouts of America announce a community fund raising drive on February 26 in Lordsburg to support local scouting work. Under a new operation plan the region is split into Grant Luna and Hidalgo counties with Roland Post directing efforts to expand opportunities for more boys.
The Lordsburg Rifle and Pistol Club will hold its annual meeting on Thursday March 4 at 7 30 PM at Richs Motor Company. The president urges all members to attend for the officer election.
