Valentina Tarazon Montez of Lordsburg died Friday night when a car carrying her was struck on I 10 by a westbound truck about 11 miles east of Lordsburg. Driver Javier Villasenor Ornelas, 29, was treated for head and face lacerations and a back injury. truck driver Henry Turner, 28, of Raleigh, Miss., was hospitalized with a concussion and leg injuries after being pinned under the tractor. The crash occurred in the right lane as both vehicles traveled west. the car overturned, ejecting occupants, while the truck trailer turned onto its left side and left the road.
The Dogies 8th grade basketball team won the Snell Tournament at Cobre gym defeating Cliff Cowboys and Snell Eagles to stay undefeated at eleven wins. Louie Bassa led with 22 points in the first game and 12 in the final, with Rudy Escobar and Pete Hernandez adding double figures. Coach De Foor praised the team after a strong championship performance.
Pablo Sanchez purchased the Pepsi Cola distributorship for the Lordsburg area. He took over deliveries last Friday and assures dealers of the best service possible.
Bill M. Kimbley received the Citizens of the Year award at the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce banquet in the Cafetorium. Director Harold Bishop presented the honor as John May of the New Mexico Department of Development spoke, praising Kimbley for four decades of unselfish civic service, two mayoral terms, leadership roles, and lengthy involvement with city government and chamber activities.
Preliminary hearing for Crispin Sotelo on aggravated battery charges in the Alberto Levario shooting is set before Justice of the Peace C. L. Brown on March 11. Sotelo is represented by Las Cruces attorney John A. Anderson. Municipal Court counts of tumultuous conduct and participating in an affray against Rayo Varela were withdrawn on motion by Police Chief C. L. Rogers.
Mayor Harber J. Heather forwards Gov. Jack M. Campbell’s letter to the Bureau of Public Roads urging an early favorable decision to reconstruct the Lordsburg Project on Railroad Ave. New Mexico seeks federal participation and a bidable contract date to end ongoing state maintenance costs.
Janaloo Hill staged a dance act titled Kits of Old Shakespeare in Santa Fe at the Bob Lemme studio on February 5. The performance mixed song and dance sketches about the ghost town’s history, a piece Hill has toured with her father Frank from Lordsburg to San Diego. During her visit she stayed with Rep Rex Kipp and attended legislative sessions where she received a commission as colonel, aide de camp, on the governor’s staff.

Lordsburg voters head to the polls Tuesday to elect a mayor for a two year term and four aldermen for four year terms. polling places are Central School Division A and City Hall auditorium Divisions B and C open 7 am to 7 pm. Two tickets and four alderman candidates are in the race with three candidates for municipal judge.
The Assembly of God Church hosts a revival with Rev. E. J. Stone as guest speaker who has spent fourteen years on the missionary field in Nicaragua. Services begin at 7 30 each evening and run through Sunday March 6 with mission slide presentations and an open invitation to the public.
