Don Kling Named 1988 Lordsburg Citizen of the Year
Don Kling, a charter member of the Lordsburg Optimist Club, was named Citizen of the Year at a Tuesday night ceremony in the LHS Cafetorium. He was cited for long service to the community, with past honors including Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and Outstanding Volunteer Organization. 117 attended as local businesses and individuals donated prizes and prizes were thanked by Chamber officials.

On February 20 at 7 30 p m a public meeting convened with about eighty five citizens. Present were Carmen Acosta Frank Acosta Becky Barringer Becky Diaz Bob Lowery Toni Lowery Charlie Hayes Pam Sanders Carr Shannon and Lance Williams. Charlie Hayes called the meeting to order and introduced the organization. He stressed the group is not a private club and urged community participation.

Dick Richards died February 14 at his ranch in the upper Animas Valley. He served Hidalgo County Sheriff from 1951 to 1954 and spent 16 years in law enforcement. Survived by wife Annabel, children, eight grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral held February 17 at Middle Animal Cemetery with pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed.
