Mavericks Wind Up Season With One Win One Loss

Lordburg Mavericks beat T or C 70-66 in non conference action then lost to Silver City 77-64. Jared Richardson led rebounds with 18 and Ruben Bassa scored 21 in the win while Sal Ortega and Richardson led the Mavericks in scoring in the loss.

Phelps Dodge Expands Regional Exploration Offices

Phelps Dodge Corp announces expansion of exploration activities in the southwestern United States. Four new regional offices opened in Salt City Utah Silver City New Mexico Reno and Boulder City Nevada to extend coverage of expanding mineral exploration efforts. Nevada offices run by Phelps Dodge Exploration Corp a wholly owned subsidiary. New Mexico site located at 411 North Bullard Street Silver City.

Meeting on conservation projects with regional SWCDs

A joint meeting with the Inservat 5 and Animas Valley Virden SWCDs was held at the Range Restaurant on February 17. Contractors and officials discussed conservation practices for livestock, pipelines, water tanks, ponds, irrigation, ditch lining, and related earth moving work. Rev M E Stevens Appointed Pastor of First Baptist Lordsburg

The First Baptist Church of Lordsburg names Rev M E Stevens and his family as new pastor family to move to Lordsburg and begin duties March 1. He previously led North Hill Baptist Carlsbad and held roles in the Carlsbad Ministerial Alliance Kiwanis and Eddy County deputy sheriff duties. He is a Hammond Indiana native educated at Moody Bible Institute Bryan University and Southern Baptist Seminary Extension.

Morris Reintroduces Bill for Atmospheric Water Yield Study

City Plans To Operate Cemetery In Shakespeare

At a Feb 15 special city council meeting a Shakespeare Cemetery Association proposal urged Lordsburg to take over cemetery operations. Mayor Koff favored accepting the resolution and retaining the current cemetery board, noting no extra city cost. A water line ditch issue prompted by a complaint was discussed and addressed. The council approved the resolution. At a Feb 9 regular meeting Warren White was reappointed city engineer and planning director with a $500 monthly salary. Police dispatchers received a $30 raise to align with male dispatcher pay.

MYF Group To See Series Of Film Strips

The Senior High Youth Fellowship of First Methodist Church will view four film strips, each Sunday evening for the next four weeks. The filmstrips will guide discussions on the subjects. Remmel Nunn serves as president of the group.

Narcotics Arrests Continue With Third Suspect In Custody

Albert Levario was arrested in Phoenix by the Maricopa County Sheriff's office on a Hidalgo County warrant for possession and sale of narcotics. He was brought before Justice of the Peace Cr Brown with bond set at $5,000 and jailed on bond. Authorities declined to comment on other suspects in the case.

Heart Fund Sunday Set For February 26

February 26 1967 is designated as Heart Fund Sunday nationwide. Citizens and businesses are urged to donate to fund scientific heart research and education to prevent heart disease and lengthen lives in Hidalgo County.

District Tourney Begins Today At Maverick Gym

The District 4-8 basketball tourney opens at Maverick Gym with games at 2 pm and 3:30 pm. Cliff and Tularosa top seeds face Weed and Animas, while consolation and semifinal rounds follow Saturday. Mavericks enter with 74.3 scoring and 880 rebounds for and 67.1 opponent average.
