Lordshoro Golf Club to host an 18 hole blind bogey tourney Sunday February 26 with 10 am tee off. Leo Cohen as chair says beginners receive handicaps and prizes await. Entry is 1 dollar, play straight through, visitors welcome, dues urged, and members in good standing may request clubhouse keys.
Howard Ross of Mountain States Telephone announced that Lordsburg added 239 telephones in 1960, up from 114 in 1959, marking a notable local growth amid state expansion. The state finished 1960 with 259000 telephones, and Lordsburg used 1364. The firm employs eight locals, with Western Electric and Mountain States crews aiding upgrades.
The New Mexico State Senate passed HB 22 by a 28 to 1 vote paving the way for paper ballot secrecy. The measure, introduced by Rep. Robert Martin and co sponsored by Rep. Jack Morgan, would eliminate the black corner on paper ballots and now rests with Gov. Mechem who could veto to stop the bill.

February marks the Heart Fund drive of the American Heart Association with Heart Sunday on February 26. Donna Reed chairs the national effort guiding research education and community service while Beta Sigma Phi Xi Phi Chapter and Girl Scout Troop No. 3 join Mrs. Dave Warren to organize volunteers. They will meet at her home at 3:00 p.m. for the 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. door knocking drive.
Judge Vearle Payne recovering from pneumonia, able to sit up briefly since Wednesday, but to stay home at least another week. Judge Paul Tackett of Albuquerque to preside in the Sixth Judicial Court during Payne’s absence.
Callie Lopez, attendant at the El Paso-Dixie service station on East Highway 70 80, was slugged and robbed early Wednesday. Two men, said to be colored, demanded oil then hit him with an unknown weapon, fleeing with 226 dollars in cash after rifling the cash register. Police pursued leads but no suspects had been named by Thursday afternoon. Sheriff Hugh Pace said his office was not directly notified.
Farmers in Pyramid Valley near Lordsburg plan castor beans as a cash crop. W E Domingo of Baker Castor Oil Co outlined cultivation from planting to harvest including weed control and fertilization. Castor beans need irrigation, average yields about a ton per acre with value near 85 dollars per acre. planting April or May, harvest about ten days after frost. pledges total 290 acres, possibly 500 acres before planting.
Imperial 400 plans another ultra modern motel in Lordsburg on the Deming highway just east of town. Dawn-Donaldson Construction Co. superintendent Pete Grimm says the two story building will include 31 rental units and a manager’s living quarters and should be finished in 90 days.
Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau held a board meeting after a February 20 barbecue at El Charro Cafe. Attendees included Adair Merrell state board member, Bill Mille and Bob of Rodeo, Marvin Jones, Le Ross Jones, Art Payne and family, Jack Gauthier co-president, Clyde Richins co-secretary, Iven Thygerson, and others from Animas Lordsburg and Virden. Speakers praised Farm Bureau strength and defended Public Law 78 in Santa Fe. Next co board meetings will shift to locals starting March 20 with location to be announced.
Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma held its February meeting at Mrs Mary Lee McInnis home with co-hostess Mrs Li lian Dalouiet sa. The program examined political changes in South Africa with a panel moderated by Miss Ima Fairly and reports on French Belgian and Portuguese colonial influences.
Mrs. Elmer Holt leads a committee of civic clubs and organizations in Lordsburg to form a local Community Improvement Program CIP. The international program, sponsored by General Federated Women's Clubs and Sears Roebuck and Co, will be chosen by local representatives for a two year period with prizes ranging from 10 to $1000. Citizens will be surveyed to gather ideas before selection.
Harber J. Heather, president of the Lord Shure Municipal Board of Education, won the New Mexico School Boards Association Award of Merit for outstanding contributions to education. The citation was announced at the association meeting in Alouquerque February 19 and 20, with Wesley Freeburg presenting the award in Lordsburg.
Several hundred livestock feeders will gather at New Mexico State University on Monday February 27 for the 22nd Annual Feeders Day. Dr Roger B Corbett president of NMSU will give the official welcome. A free barbecue will follow at the judging laboratory.
Virgil Jones announced that on February 20 a load of 1120 9% inch Rainbow Trout was released on the lower Gila River at Fuller Farms between Red Rock and Virden. He said fishing will be good for early fishermen.
