Private Franchise Group Seeks Change in Lordsburg Gas Rates

A local group, the Consortium of Natural Gas Consumers, aims to pressure Lordsburg to drop its in house gas sales via a franchise and study outsourcing to a gas company. They cite a ~200% rate increase since last July, urge city council action, and note to compare with Silver City and Deming. They circulate petitions and call for a special council meeting.

Hidalgo County Approves 211827 Hospital Budget Plan

Hidalgo County Commissioners approved a 211827 fee for Hidalgo General Hospital after trimming 1000 from capital expenditures. The plan budgets 211626 expenditures and 211899 income, with a 272 balance, reopening slated March 12. Revenue comes from 18832 federal funds, 71692 property taxes, and 121375 hospital income based on five patients daily over 105 days.

Last Time This Century Eclipse Of Sun Coming Monday

The last total solar eclipse of the 20th century visible from North America occurs Monday morning February 26, with a 175 mile wide path from the Pacific through Oregon Washington Idaho Montana North Dakota parts of Canada and ending in Greenland. Observers east of Lake Winnipeg will see 2 minutes 52 seconds of totality. At New Mexico State University the event runs 8 10 a m with maximum at 9 15 a m and more than 70 percent blocked. Safe viewing methods include shade No 13 glass and pinhole projection. The campus observatory will host public viewing 8 10 a m with safety-filtered telescopes and staff on hand.

Lordsburg High Students Chosen for Washington Seminar

Lordsburg High seniors Victor Ornelas and Sandi Howard were selected for the Washington Workshops Congressional Seminar in Washington D C. Ornelas attends February 25 and March 4 1979 while Howard goes March 4 11 1979. Both live with families in Golf Park and Shakespeare Street. The program, in partnership with Marymount College of Virginia, offers hands on exposure to American politics and Congress.

Former Local Residents To View Monday's Eclipse

Two former Lordsburg residents, David Schmidt and Gene Lee, are in Ontario Canada studying the solar eclipse project. Government and university teams from Canada Switzerland NASA ASL PSL and several U S universities coordinate atmospheric research. Ear Falls Red Lake and Boomer Town host about 300 personnel with CBS crews filming a CBS special. Temperatures lately ranged from 43 below zero to nine above.
