Escaped prisoner Montoya ends life near Wamel ranch

A 20 year old escapee, Ignacio Montoya Jr., shot and killed himself Saturday afternoon near the R H Wamel ranch south of Cotton City after officers pursued three jail escapees from Log Lunas. Melvin Chambers and Giles Lorento were captured and jailed in Lordsburg.

Lordsburg Grads Honored On First Semester Roll

Jan Hill of Lordsburg and William Bean head the first semester honor roll at New Mexico Western College Silver City with straight A averages. Twenty three students earned honors across freshmen sophomores juniors seniors and adult students meeting 15 semester hours and no failing grades. Miss Hill is daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Hill of Shakespeare.

Janice Malott Heads National Honor Society At Lordsburg High

Janice Malott senior at Lordsburg High School was named president of the newly formed National Honor Society. Officers include Billy Davis vice president Ilene Hodgins secretary Mary Florence Baker treasurer and Lois Ann Richards historian. Malott has seven years in the Senior Band and active roles in Pep Club FTA and All-State band and chorus. Plans for a scrapbook and exhibit were discussed.

Heart Sunday Drive Launches in Lordsburg

Homer Brooks announced the Heart Drive will begin Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM with a house to house canvass in Lordsburg. On Saturday February 23, Sun shine Girls from ages 9 to 11 will run Tag Day Sales for the Heart Fund under Mrs Frank Bowman’s leadership. Several girls will participate and will collect donations from 9:00 AM to noon as American Heart Month and Heart Sunday approach to fund the nationwide fight against heart disease.

Coaches Bob Henning and Ralph Craig lead a 10 man squad to New Mexico A&M for the District 4-B playoffs. The 1957 March of Dimes campaign raised 3316.89 dollars, sponsored by the Lordsburg Lions Club and led by county chairman N. M. Morrison. Treasurer Jick Rice praised all workers. half of funds stay local, half go to the National Foundation. additional aid possible if county funds are depleted. detailed receipts include several coffee contributions from local residents.

Speaker Dr. Jack Saunders Addresses Lions Club

Dr. Jack Saunders associate professor of education at New Mexico Western College Silver City was the main speaker at the Lions Club event on Tuesday. He spoke on education as foundational to all professions and noted the centennial of teachers associations with a planned birthday observance on April 4 on the NMWC campus Field House.

Geronimo District Merit Badge Show Announced

The Geronimo District of Yucca Council Boy Scouts of America hosts its annual Merit Badge Show on March 23 at Co bre High School Bayard from 2 to 9 p.m. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers will display crafts, requirements, and topics including Ground Observer Corps work and 108 merit badges. The event, in Hidalgo Grant and Luna counties, will feature a country fair style exhibit setup and is expected to attract wide attendance.

Mavericks Split Par of Games Over Weekend

Lordsburg Mavericks beat Truth or Consequences 50 to 46 on Saturday to secure a var city win, while Friday’s loss to Western of Silver City by 58 to 38 was led by John Arredondo with 14 points. Arredondo topped Saturday’s scoring with 19, Barnes adding 17. D Trujillo of Toro led T or C with 14. The Lordsburg B team fell 43-38 to T or C second stringers.
