Dr. Leon Bowers, chairman of History and Science at New Mexico Western, Silver City, addressed the Lordsburg County Chamber of Commerce Banquet at The American Legion Hall. He warned of Soviet aims in the Middle East and called for stronger U S schools while praising Col Holt. Attendance was 107 as local and out of town officials attended and a turkey dinner followed.

The next game date was moved from Saturday to Friday night and is the last regular season contest. District tournament action will occur in Silver City next week with games at New Mexico Western College gymnasium. The Mavericks open against Cuta at 2 p.m. Friday.

Two Car Collision Near Virden Cut Off Sends Two to Hospital
A Sunday morning crash on Highway 70 west of the Virden cut off injured Cyrus Palmer 67 of Truth or Consequences and his wife, and George Hoar 70 of Lincoln Massachusetts. Palmer suffered shock and heart strain. Mrs Palmer multiple injuries. Hoar’s wife broke a collar bone and was later moved to a different hospital. Hoar shaken but lightly hurt. State Officer Joe Rutland cited Palmer mistaking the Virden cut off and swerving back into the highway.

The Hidalgo County Red Cross chapter directors elected new officers for the 1958 fundraising drive. Mrs. Jack Hazleton was named chairman replacing Fred Ewing who presided at the meeting at Hotel Hidalgo. Arthur Shaw became vice chairman, Elmer Jeanes secretary, Cassie Martinez treasurer, with Ewing continuing as fund chairman. Directors and committee chairs to be chosen later.

March First Deadline for Filing For City Offices Set by Council
The city council set March first as the filing deadline for candidacies in the upcoming city election to be held in April with noon as the closing time. They consolidated polling places to make city hall the polling site and ordered stricter enforcement of the 25 mph speed limit on Railroad Avenue. A one hour parking limit on Railroad from Main to Chester was approved once signs go up, and officers were told to crack down on cars parked across the painted lane. The clerk was to notify the state highway department about unsatisfactory street repairs. Former Lordsburg Resident Johnnie Coughlin Dies in El Paso
Word reaches that Johnnie Coughlin a former Lordsburg resident died suddenly in El Paso on Tuesday evening. Funeral services are set for today Friday at 4 p.m. at St Josephs Catholic Church. The Liberal will publish the obituary next week.
