The article recalls C. H. McIntosh piloting a cross country flight into Lordsburg Los Angeles and landing in Texas town Beson or nearby. Passengers included a stewardess busy with diapers and bottles aboard.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Mortuary for Mrs Belle Gladden Owens 67 who died in a Silver City hospital burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. She was born July 5 1878 in Corning Ohio and joined the Church of Christ in 1894. Surviving are her husband Marshall M Owens a daughter Dave Williams two sisters and two granddaughters. A trio sang brief numbers and a group of pallbearers served.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p m at Anthony Baptist Church for James Arthur Penny 29 who died Saturday from injuries after a motorcycle collision 25 miles east of here He died in Lordsburg hospital en route to visit family Surviving are his wife Ruth Penny three children Ollie Lee Larry Arthur and Cecil Allen his mother Esther Lee Penny of Lordsburg a brother Cecil O Penny of Marion Ohio and a sister Stella Smith of Lordsburg.
Col Willard E Holt 86 longtime Lordsburg booster and former Deming publisher died Tuesday after months of illness. Funeral at Methodist Church with Knights of Pythias aiding. burial Mountain View cemetery. Survived by four daughters and four grandchildren.
The B Sharp Music Club hosted a Monday recital featuring Lordsburg High School Girls Glee Club directed by Wesley Darkhuff with accompanist Faye Nally. The program included piano duets, solos by young artists, assembly singing, and readings, with Mary Lou Brown and Leola Rae Payne among organizers and Marilyn Kuykendall and Rebecca Vasquez on piano.
Lola Mae Atkinson daughter of Mr and Mrs John W Atkinson Abilene Texas married James Turner Clifton son of Mrs Marion Clifton El Paso in First Baptist Church El Paso on Feb 14. Dr W H Rogers officiated Mrs John Ball a close friend was Clifton's attendant Hilliard S Bryan attended reception at Ball home. Clifton is chief inspector for the El Paso Retail Credit Co. couple to reside in El Paso.
Two Mexican officials visited Washington to discuss foot and mouth disease with U S government agencies as border quarantine reopens for a second time in 12 months. The text notes past U S outbreaks, livestock losses, and human food supply risk. It also covers NM Experiment Station findings on cotton fertilization by Ståten and Hinkle and the mimeographed bulletin on yields from fertilizer and legume rotation.
An afternoon of fun for thirty five Grade 5 pupils at Central School on February 14 featured a decorated Valentine box, distribution of Valentines, seating at card tables with Valentine place cards, refreshments prepared by three mothers, and a variety of games.
A national program plans 10000 to 7000 miles of coaxial facilities in 5 or 6 years to boost long distance service and television networks. The system can carry 480 telephone circuits per pair and 4 million cycle TV bands with repeaters every few miles. Routes include New York Philadelphia and Atlanta El Paso Lordsburg Los Angeles.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration recommends a three year program to improve 31 New Mexico airports including Lordsburg and add seaplane bases at Albuquerque Carlsbad Fort Sumner and Hot Springs. The plan covers upgrades from class 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 and introduces paved runways at several sites.
Members of the Lordsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club hosted a supper and a program. Health committee chairwoman Mrs. Charles Steele announced three films on alcohol, the Negro, and TB and germs shown by Mr. Shell of the Sanitation Department.
Dr. H. H. Conder and Delford Benson flew to Albuquerque in Benson’s Taylor Craft two place plane. Conder is a pilot while Benson is learning to fly. They landed at Deming and returned to Lordsburg by car.
Miss Sally Anne Darnell became the bride of James Finley Richards in a 3 p.m. ceremony Sunday February 9 at Grace Methodist Church in Douglas Arizona Reverend Roland Cartwright officiated. The reception followed with about three hundred guests and the couple will reside in Rodeo after a short honeymoon.
Negotiations on selling the Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp are to be renewed after a Washington Senate Civil Service Committee review. Mrs Gina Lusk NM representative told El Paso chamber leaders that the RFC and offices agreed to halt current actions and reopen bids and advertising so Lordsburg can bid on preferred sections while RFC may also bid on housing portions for Feinberg. City attorney Forrest Sanders testified upon returning Monday night.
George Washington Armijo 69, state corporation commissioner and former House speaker, died Sunday in Santa Fe after pneumonia. A veteran of the Rough Riders, he helped draft New Mexico’s 1910 constitution and held posts including chief clerk of the House, sheriff, and State Sheep Sanitary Board secretary. Survivors include widow L. K. Armijo and three sons.
New parking regulations restrict curbside stalls on Railroad Avenue to two hours. Crews marked stalls and no parking zones all week. Police Chief Lalo Sanchez has issued several warn in tickets as officials urge motorists to comply. Crossing signs were painted at Railroad Avenue and Main Street.
Mr. and Mrs. J R Poindexter spoke with their son Capt Bill Poindexter who serves with an Army Transport group in Germany. They connected at about noon Monday which was 9 p.m. in Germany and noted he had recently been assigned duties there with his wife and two children joining him later.
Awards were presented Tuesday to Lions Club members for participating in the January membership drive. Recipients included Dr. Carl Fife Arlo Benson Harry Galusha Eugene Romney C M Steele Harvey Brooks C N Williams Pete Chase Paul Tooley Dr James H Baxter E N Fisher Fausto Noce Harold E Scofield and Dr C B Austin. New members named were Henry Ellison Delford Benson J D Toll ett Homer Brooks Cliff Tenny Ben Cochran D A Clean Dorsett Jack Morgan A A Richards Charles Foxworth Gene Noce Harber Heather C M Steele and C N Williams. Jim Shirer Boy Scouts district field executive and Glenn H Cummings VA central committee member spoke briefly.
The U S Weather Bureau records daily high and low temperatures for a week in February. From Friday the 14th to Thursday the 20th highs ranged 60s to 72 with lows in the 20s to 30s. Notable is Sunday with a low of 2 degrees.
