Simple Food Stamp Plan Wins County Merchants Support

A mass meeting of local merchants at the county courthouse, led by Ernest J. Short, approved a straightforward government food stamp plan. A county merchants association was formed with Dudley Robertson as chairman and other local business members. The group will inform grocers, milkmen, and food handlers about the program and guide customers entitled to buy stamps.

Deaton Passes in Morenci Arizona 1941

Saan C Deaton dies in Morenci Arizona on February 1941 at the age of 38. He was born October 1 1902 in New Mexico and spent much of his life there and in Arizona. He married Hawkins in Silver City on June 3, 1929 and worked at a garage and later for Phelps Corporation. Funeral held at Heather Funeral Home with Rev J Elbert Nash delivering the sermon. Pallbearers included W N Harold D Edwards Kimble O K Leonard B Cole and Truman Mullins. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

The Lions Club held a Tuesday noon meeting with Mayfield presiding. Allen Bowman was unanimously elected a member and gave an acceptance speech. Lion Emanuel introduced a talk on aiding democracy preservation and patriotism urged flags on holidays. Mayfield urged stronger Citizenship Day and highlighted European war differences. Scofield read a Deming Lions Charter Night invitation for March 11.

Grade School Basketball Tourney Opens Tomorrow

The Southwestern New Mexico Grade School Basketball Tournament starts Saturday at Central School gym with 16 teams, eight in regular and eight in midget brackets. Teams from Lordsburg, Virden, Hurley, Central, Cliff, Santa Rita, Columbus, Fierro and Deming enter in both divisions, with Virden fielding only a midget team and Fierro only a regular team. Games begin around 8 30 a m with sessions and 10 15 65 minute gaps. referees are Martin Estrada and Alfredo Guzman.

Two More Draptees Enter Service to Fort Sill

County Clerk Marshall Fuller and Hughie Sullivan left for Santa Fe Tuesday to be inducted into the Army and sent to Fort Sill Oklahoma for a year. A courthouse crowd gave Fuller a pen and pencil set before departure. Monday night he hosted a dinner at Hidalgo Coffee Shop with guests including Ben Cochran Junior Jones and Margo Harrington of Tucson.

Adult Social At Church Of Christ In Bible School Annex

Monday evening an adult social was held in the Bible School annex of the Church of Christ. Sociability songs and games were enjoyed. Carolyn Ruth Atkinson gave a humorous reading and six members presented a humorous pantomime. Home made ice cream and cake were served. Attendees included several Atkinsons, Wood, Swan, McWhorter, Winters, Castillo, Broun, Ewing, Carney, Krewson, Ellett, Foslin, Fairly, and Turney.
