Simmie Gibson Farming s Advisor will visit Lordsburg No. 17 Order of Rain–Girls on February 27. The meeting starts at 7 30 PM in the Hall, with Girls Masons and Star members invited. Gibson, daughter of James H. Gibson, is a high school senior with Honor Society, orchestra, choir and Valedictorian, also affiliated with Baptist and the Eastern Star.
Hidalgo County Heart Fund chairman Sam Gass said Beta Sigma Phi chapters lead Heart Sunday on February 22 from 1 00 to 4 00 p m. Girl Scouts assist in appeals for funds to support research into heart disease, which affects over 500 000 schoolchildren and one in sixteen people in the United States.
The All-American Red Heads schedule a February 26 exhibition in Lorschburg High School gym facing the local men’s team and the National Guard at 8 p.m. The troupe tours the United States and overseas, drawing large crowds and earning CBS exposure on Ed Sullivan’s Toast of the Town.
The third annual Border City Sales Congress will open February 25 in El Paso as part of Life Insurance Week. Seven nationally known life insurance speakers headline including Lester O. Schriver of Washington D C as chair and keynote. Other speakers hail from Austin Dallas Los Angeles and comprise Morton Utley Harry Levy C E Gaines August Hansch Ora Walk and Kenneth Skinner.
On Washingtons Birthday the theft of a marble block from the Temple of Concord and the Know Nothing party ties to the Washington Monument saga. Congress authorized funds in 1855, the project stalled by 1854, then finished in 1884 at 555 feet with a $1.5 million cost.
Five students topped the first semester honor roll at New Mexico Western College with A grades in all subjects. Dean Donald Over turf announced this week. Jan Louise Hill of Lordsburg joined 38 honor roll students with no grade below a B. Mack Pace and Sanford Chandler were named among 69 students with a B average or better.
The Duncan Valley Electric Cooperative held its annual meeting February 14 at 2 30 p m in the Duncan School gym. Virden adults filled the crowd as President Larue Allred welcomed attendees and Secretary Irel Lunt read last year's minutes. Guest speaker John Shanklin discussed Irrigation Farm Management with attorney Guy Anderson of Safford also present. Two board members were re elected Larue Allred and Lewis A Conners with Eddie Edgars of Duncan newly joining the board.
Tom Wiley, state superintendent of schools, spoke to the Lions Club about the new setup of the state department of education. The department sets minimum certification, curriculum, and building standards while local boards may raise standards. The new nine member board, appointed by Governor Burroughs, will have terms decided partly by a drawing with one member from each of ten judicial districts.
Lt. Col. Edward J. Hooten announces Lt. Jesus Estrada named project officer for the annual Muster Day celebration of the New Mexico National Guard unit. Btry C 716 AAA Gun Bn plans open house at the local armory with visits for boys of military age and church attendance followed by military films and classes.
Lordsburg VFW Post No. 3099 and the Auxiliary host a potluck supper at EF Charro on Saturday February 21 at 7 p.m. District Commander Ubaldo Benavides of Bayard and Junior Vice Commander Tommy Foy of Central will speak after the meal. The Fourth District includes Bayard Deming Silver City Central Hatch and Lordsburg. All members urged to attend.
