Welcome buyers sellers and visitors as Lordsburg hosts a gem and mineral show featuring vendors, demonstrations, and displays across the town’s exhibition hall this weekend. Local clubs and sponsors promote geology education and collecting hobby.
Lordsburg City Council approved a resolution to accept Federal Aviation Administration funds for the Lordsburg Municipal Airport project. Funds will cover runway widening apron drainage and ramp work with no implementation date set.
Western New Mexico University reports an 8.9 percent gain in total enrollment to 2,503 students across main campus, extensions, and Gallup Center as CHE receives late spring totals. From 1987 to 1992 the university notes a 47 percent growth trend, with fall headcount and full time student percentages among the highest in the state.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce announces Memorial Day weekend events led by Clark Smith including a 5K run a 2 mile walk and a 1 mile run on Monday May 31 titled Run Shakespeare Ghost Town. Coach Richard Moore leads the race and will promote flyers at races nationwide before May 31.
Hidalgo and Grant counties qualify for Farmers Home Administration emergency loans after flooding since January 5 1993 with at least a 30 percent production loss. Proceeds from crop insurance affect eligibility. Patricia Hunt urges eligible farmers to apply. A correction notes DTMS won first place per DTMS Principal Fred LaMarca despite a prior article claiming second place.
Sheriff Bob Hall cautions that a roofer may be operating in Lordsburg without a license or company name. He urges residents to call the Sheriff or City Police before arranging repairs. John David Atkinson Sr. born August 22, 1905 near Cloudcroft NM. He helped found a Lordsburg bakery and Pepsi distribution, served as a Church of Christ elder, and mentored his son in Mexico City missions. Survived by wife Mildred and five children, 27 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren. died February 11, 1993.
The Hidalgo County Literacy Council held an open house on February 5 1993 to introduce residents to its program and new office in the old hospital building in Lordsburg donated by the County Commissioners. Judge Manuel Saucedo spoke at the ribbon cutting and said Hidalgo County is fortunate to have a literacy program while urging people to acknowledge the problem and volunteer.
