Donald A. McGhee who has served as acting postmaster in Lordsburg for the past year was nominated for the permanent post. The nomination was sent to the U.S. Senate for confirmation by the president.
Dan Caillouette Jr faced a trial on cattle theft when his attorney secured a no contest plea. The court gave a deferred sentence and placed him on probation with $25 monthly costs, under Judge Allen Walker.
Howard Ross of Mountain States Telephone announces the new directory will list all local telephones and those in Silver City Bayard Deming Santa Rita Glenwood and Columbus. The yellow page changes must be in by March 4 and white pages by March 11 with a one year directory term.

Governor Paul Fannin served as master of ceremonies with Cornell Universitys president as the main speaker during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the University of Arizona.
Adair Gossett state Civil Defense director lauded the Lordsburg Rangers for their unpaid service and training. He said the unit will soon receive communications equipment to aid disaster responses. Mayor Alan A. Koff thanked guests for ongoing searches and community work. Members listed include James Kinkema Loyd Reed Arnold Black William Ramage and others.
Hidalgo County chairman Sam Gass leads the 1960 Heart Fund drive opened February 1 to support nationwide heart research education and community service. Gifts fund research dissemination medical journals and doctor access to the latest findings.
The Mavericks went 1 2 in a five game span last week with the Reserve losing 65 54 to end the year. Frausto led with 12 points while Estrada added 11 and Payne 9. Cobre beat Lordsburg 12 point margin Friday as Frausto and Corral tied at 12. The Colts defeated Lordsburg 56 47 on Saturday. B team and Freshmen also had losses as schedule winds down with two games this week at Hot Springs and Cloudcroft.
The City Council met at 5 p.m to consider a proposal by John Robertson for the city to lease over 200 acres of Jakie McCants land for a municipal nine hole golf course at 500 dollars per year. The plan envisions a do it yourself project with little city cost and aims to boost tourism. The council unanimously authorized execution of the lease after confirming it complies with the Bateman Act. Aldermen Miller Hill and Noce were not present.
New Mexico health officials announce a free mobile chest X ray and diabetes blood testing program for Hidalgo County adults in Lordsburg on February 23 and 24 at the Court House grounds from 9 to 12 and 1 to 5. TB history or family TB diabetes increases participation priority.
James L. Smith of the Lordsburg Police Department has accepted a temporary leave of absence to serve as district captain for the Navajo Police Department. He will train officers across six stations covering about 6000 square miles and oversee operations, planning, and training.
Richard B. Rice publisher of the Lordsburg Liberal received a certificate from the Governor's Office in Santa Fe naming him colonel and aide de camp on Governor Burroughs staff. The commission is dated January 25. Capt. Jesus Estrada notes the town now has many colonels for the National Guard.
