Faculty of Freeburg Public Schools met Tuesday evening at Hidalgo to discuss mutual concerns. Superintendent Freeburg presided as informal sessions encouraged open comment on salaries work conditions and classroom issues.
The Lordsburg Lions Club will sponsor Hidalgo County Red Cross Drive starting March 1 to reach a 1683 dollar quota. Campaign Chairman R B Ownby will organize soliciting committees and urge local clubs, businesses, and individuals to contribute. The Red Cross supports disaster relief, armed forces, health safety education, and Junior Red Cross nationwide.
Lordsburg Rifle and Pistol Club President Eldon Taylor calls a Thursday 7 30 p m meeting at City Hall to adopt by laws. Membership nears 60 with several new female members. Range site chosen. inspection and approval pending. Contacts George Eddy Tom Mawkins Doctor Baxter Bennie Everett.
State Highway Patrolman John Bradford warns automobile owners that the March 1 deadline for 1949 license plates is near. After March 1 a $1 daily penalty and 15 percent surcharge apply for late purchase, with checks on brake and light stickers and operator licenses to follow.
Mrs. Gretchen S. Spencer, Hidalgo county registration clerk, reminds 18 year old males to register within 5 days after their 18th birthday as required by law. The local board is in the Heather building next to Heather Mortuary.
Milford Garrett Henderson alias Tipton Lee and JL. E. Tipton, 37, sought in Oklahoma for the murder of Susie Swimmer, 28, was nabbed in Lordsburg by FBI, Sheriff Oscar Allen, Deputy Carl Baker, and NM State Police Patrolman I R Funk. Henderson is charged with assault and pushing Swimmer from a Muskogee hotel window on July 3, 1947. He had earlier been arrested on a murder charge but released for lack of evidence. new warrants from October 7, 1948 led to renewed pursuit after prints identified him. The breakthrough came when he was arrested in Silver City for a hotel bill and fingerprinted, revealing his true identity.
Three men were arrested by Chief of Police Lalo Sanchez after attempting to abandon a stolen car in Yuma Arizona. Harry Short and Preston Lesage were turned over to the FBI for prosecution on the Dyer Act. Earl Edwards, a sailor, was released after investigations showed he was not involved. The theft arose from the owner leaving the car unlocked.
The Bu siness and Professional Women's club held a health and safety program with 36 members and 11 guests at Elsie Lee's. Speaker Locke L. Mounton discussed first aid water safety and accidents. Dr. Mitchell outlined local and state health department activities. John Bradford urged safer driving.
Plans for a new golf course on Ernest Short’s donated property have been drawn and approved. Work will begin soon with the aim of opening early in the season. For membership rules contact Leo Cohen or any club officer.
The Lions Club will present a new by laws set for adoption or rejection at the March 1 meeting. The president urges full attendance so members influence the outcome and understand changes likely to affect club operations.
The Hidalgo County Teachers Association met last Monday evening with Mrs. Bill Clause presiding. Plans were made for a March 12 meeting in Virden. The legislative committee led by Mrs. Moselle Messecar and Miss Ima Fairly discussed current New Mexico school legislation and decided to telegram Rex Kipp and Senate chair Horacio Delargas and Viola Reynolds to convey the association's views.
Nellie Donnelly and Walter A. Tyler marked fifty years since their 1899 Dale Texas marriage. After Texas years they moved to New Mexico and settled in Valley View for eighteen years. A noon luncheon honored the couple with D. A. Lee Asa Tyler and families among guests.
The newly organized Altar Society of the Church of St. Joseph will hold a food sale Sunday morning February 20 from 9 to 12 in the rectory. Delicious hot tamales and homemade enchilada chili sauce plus other dishes will be for sale.
