Last minute preparations signal a three day Liberal Cooking School at the Palace Theatre. Lectures by experts will cover new dishes kitchen gadgets and time saving techniques with free recipe sheets and gifts for attendees.
Troop 121 members met after school for a Court of Honor to judge scouts in tests and plan events. Attendees included Claude Allen Broun Joe l Gilbert Juvens Charles h Henry Ellison Henry Fut Charles Walters Jimmy Cod Fred Ewing Cal Hill and Richins. New scout shirts and neckerchiefs arrived and a Cub Scout group organization was completed. Snooks Foley of Los An is visiting friends.
Official from the Collector of Internal Revenue will visit Lordsburg on March 2 to assist residents with preparing income tax returns. The Treasury representative will be based at the First National Bank and will aid those having difficulties. Income tax returns are due to the Collector before March.
Chevrolet regional manager Johnny Johnson and zone manager F C Mengel visited Tucson Tuesday for a conference with Montague Townsend, local agent. They toured Cave Creek Rustlers Park and Chiricahua National Monument, praised local cooperation and business, and considered bringing Johnson’s family to the area.

Socorro High School, last year's district No. 3 finalist and state runner up, visits Lordsburg to face the Mavericks in a preview of upstate basketball. Coach Pierce plans Extrada Guzman at forward with Thompson at center and Cureton Hill at guards as Lordsburg Lions meet Virden M men in the preliminary.
Those not at last Sunday’s gathering missed lively fun and honest questions. This Sunday boys will answer for the first time while girls stay silent. a luncheon and skating party follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ.
Mr. and Mrs. H E Scofield entertained the Thursday Bridge club February 10 with guests including Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Pierce Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Robertson Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pierce Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Moses and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sullivan. Joe Sullivan and Joe Sullivan tied high scores. Valentines themed decorations and card tallys complemented chicken salad wafers nut bread sandwiches and coffee served by the hostess.
The F. E. club hosted by Mrs Herman Gustafson met Thursday afternoon. Members received Valentines with verses by Mrs Gustafson. Banana salad fruit roll and coffee were served to Mrs Leonis Peterson Mrs Ethie Mae Baxter Mrs Emma Scofield Mrs Ruth Sundgren and Mrs Myrle Bowman. Children Freddie Peterson Donald Gustafson Mark Bowman and Dorothy Sundgren attended.
C. C. Martin of Duncan spent Thursday in Lordsburg on a business visit.
About fifty head of registered Herefords will be sold Tuesday at the Southwestern Livestock Show in El Paso. The sale includes 42 bulls and 8 heifers from fourteen herds with breeders from New Mexico and Texas listing producers and committee members.
Mrs. E J Short entertained the Wednesday Bridge club last week with a tamale luncheon. Guests included Mrs. J H Clark, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. R Ek, Mrs. Buvens, Mrs. Downey, Nat Gammon, Harold Rolfe and C B Austin.
Tom Nations of Virden announces his candidacy for the Hidalgo County Precinct No. 1 commissioner nomination. He has lived in the Virden area for about thirty years, farms west of Virden, is married with five children, and has eight years on the Neblett community school board. He is a charter member of the Robert Swan Post of the American Legion in Lorderburg.
The court ruled Floyd A. Brown not liable for a Las Cruces auto accident. Val Willingham sued for twenty six thousand fifty dollars. McHalffey Payne defended for Lordsburg with J Benson Newell and Herbert Manasse leading the prosecution. Judge Hay presided in Las Cruces at Judge Frenger's request.
A delightful surprise party celebrated Faye Nalley’s eleventh birthday on Monday afternoon with red and white decorations. After valentines were read attendees enjoyed gifts a salad sandwich cake and cocoa.
Mr and Mrs F H Daniels are driving a 1938 Caribbean blue Packard club coupe purchased from the Motor Sales Company.
A large Paladior Pavilion crowd watched preliminaries where Horseshoe McCarty beat Peppy Reyes, and Jack Taylor defeated Gentle man Jim Londes in two of three falls. London defeated Pancho Villa in two falls, Villa carried from ring. promoter Neel plans another card featuring Yaqui Joe vs London.
Lordsburg Business and Professional Women club gathered February 10 with Olivia Wells chairing the education program. Kay Peterson spoke on Public Welfare reports and transient aid records to aid state services, with plans for a March meeting led by Luella Clark.
Mrs Anna Mahar and Mrs T B Williams their Bunco party Friday night February 11 at John A Johnsons home. Guests included Mr and Mrs Claude Sanders Mr and Mrs Charlie Walter Mr and Mrs Austin Wallace Sergeant and Mrs W V Apple Mr and Mrs Clarence Elkins Mrs Frank Stengele Mrs Celeste Arnold Miss Madeline Constable G Augenhaugh T B Williams Harvey Stengele Norvil Quinn Keith Lynnton Terry Williams and the hosts. After refreshments were served various games were played.
Mr and Mrs K F Hicks of Chicago are visiting Mr and Mrs Herman Gustafson. The visitors are old friends of the family and have been pals since childhood.
Frank Weldon Jr. returns from the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque and friends report he is greatly improved and could be nearly fully recovered after a rest from the trip.
Hidalgo county prepares six 4-H club calves for the Southwestern Livestock Show which opens February 19. 4-H boys Mancel Mortensen Marcel Mortensen Sven Thygerson and Laurence Smith feed calves while a livestock judging team includes Marcel Mortensen Devere Payne Donald Jones and Harvey Hatch. Over 300 animals have been entered and officials expect record attendance with a $1500 prize pool. A new feature is the Southwestern Rodeo sponsored by the El Paso Police Department.
Plans for the Lions Club Carnival in Lordsburg set for February 26 at the Knights of Pythian hall. Chairman Harold EB Scofield says a fine orchestra will provide music and a dance will draw pleasure seekers. amusements and games will be offered. IPTA act is highlighted as a main attraction urging attendance.
Remodeling work is nearing completion on the Motor Sales Company main building in Lordsburg. Contractor William Burke leads the project and promises an attractive Pueblo style structure with storage, garage space, and new offices. Manager Allan Koff is praised for delivering an up to date, appealing establishment to the town.
Mrs. Franklin Martin widow of Dr. Franklin Martin first president of the American College of Surgeons of Chicago and her cousin Mrs. Fredric A Besley of Waukegan Illinois arrived in Lordsburg on Wednesday evening and left for Phoenix on Thursday afternoon for their journey south by air or rail, according to local schedules.
Yesterday a snow storm affected Lordsburg and statewide areas. Mrs Victor Culberson drove from Silver City and reported two to three inches of snow in the mountains.
Mrs Kate Evans Walker of Battle Creek Michigan sister of Minnie Evans Keyes Right Worthy Grand Secretary O B and of John Evans former governor visited Lordsburg Thursday accompanied by Mrs Gladys Clarage and Louis Henchel of Kalamazoo Michigan.
Prospect builders and homeowners in Lordsburg Hidalgo County are urged to visit the chamber of commerce for details on a new building under the federal housing law. Eight to ten locals have expressed intent to build new homes. Government insurance rises to 90 percent, ten percent higher than before.
Lordsburg hosts Joseph A. Bursey manager of the State Tourist Bureau and Port of Entry board in a personal interview detailing three years of advertising gains. He cites rising requests from 26 000 in 1986 to 50 000 in 1997 and a 1998 campaign under way with ads starting in January.

Mr and Mrs O J Moon of Hatch traveled to Lordsburg on Wednesday and Thursday for business and to visit friends.
The Lordsburg Lions Club heard Joseph A. Bursey, director of the State Tourist Bureau and Ports of Entry board, discuss tourism in New Mexico. New members were elected including W Noble Kirkpatrick and Jim Gilkerson. The club also noted basketball events and urged support for a local glasses program for visually impaired children.
All members are urged to attend the regular monthly meeting of the Woman's Club on Monday February 21 at 2 30 p m A special program has been arranged by the committee consisting of Mrs C B Austin and H E Scofield.
