Hidalgo County March of Dimes Drive Success

The 1956 Hidalgo County March of Dimes campaign surpassed last year with many groups contributing. The report lists donations from Rebekah Lodge Lordsburg Schools Rodeo School Virden Community and others totaling hundreds of dollars with future returns expected.

Lordsburg Chapter No 21 hosts a February 14 Eastern Star meeting with Worthy Grand Matron Anna Williams and Worthy Grand Patron Glenn McCoy as honored guests. Rainbow Girls presented a corsage of dollar bills for the benevolent fund. speakers included Miss Janice Maiott and Mrs. Anna Chase.

Captain John Bradford to lead Albuquerque District

Captain John R. Bradford of the New Mexico State Police is named supervisor of the Albuquerque District effective March 1. Bradford joined the force in 1937, served in Lordsburg Silver City Las Cruces and Roosevelt County, and has completed courses at Northwestern University Traffic Institute.

Civic Dinner Honors Local Civic Groups by BPW Club

The Business and Professional Women club hosted its annual Civic Dinner at the American Legion Hall on February 9. Wesley Freeburg spoke on the civic duty of schools and pointed readers to Look magazine. Local leaders from the Chamber of Commerce and women’s clubs shared brief remarks as music and a piano piece accompanied the evening. About fifty attendees participated in the dinner and subsequent meeting.

Worthy Matron and Grand Matron Receive Honors at Chapter

Ruth Bishop’s poem honoring her was read during the ceremony. Visitors attended from Hobbs Carlsbad Tyrone Albuquerque and Pecos Texas. The Valentine themed refreshments were arranged by Mrs. Terra Rolfe and Mrs. Clara Brown.

Safety Council Organized In Hidalgo County

Mr Frank Martin of Santa Fe outlined plans to form a Hidalgo County Safety Council under the New Mexico Traffic Safety Commission. At City Hall he detailed aims to recruit members and spread safe driving habits with 21 of 32 counties already organized. Temporary chairman Paul Probert and a three person committee were named to spread the gospel locally with bylaws under review. next meeting in March.

Lordsburg Mavericks Win Seasonal Weekend Games

The Lordsburg Mavericks defeated Hachita 65 to 40 on the weekend and also beat Hatch. Coach Smith used fourteen players in the Hachita game while the Mavericks held a strong early lead and never relinquished it.

Lordsburg Freshmen Win Hurley Freshmen Tournament

Lordsburg claimed the freshman tournament title at Cobre defeating Cobre 44 to 34 after trailing at halftime. Nick Ruiz led Lordsburg with 12 points in the final and Denny Rendon added 12. Cobre’s Huerta scored 16 in the final. Earlier games included a 37 to 35 win by Cobre over Gadsden and a 34 to 32 Lordsburg win over Silver City Colts. Gadsden beat Western to take third place.

Maj. General C C Sage announced a state wide one day drive on February 22 to enlist 75 000 Guardsmen for the fiscal year goal. Local unit Battery C 716th AAA Bn aims 35 recruits centering on parental advice to influence young men to join and gain training pay and future benefits.

Cienega Lake Improvement Plan for Recreation Area

Plans propose developing the San Simon Cienega area into a shaded recreation site in Hidalgo County. A shallow man made lake already exists, stocked with fish, with bass thriving in the water, and plans call for further improvements to attract visitors.

District 4 B Tournament brings ten towns to Silver City on February 24 and 25. Teams Cliff Chita Reserve Cloudcroft Tularosa Hot Springs Lordsburg Animas Weed Hatch receive byes Friday. First rounds include Hachita vs Reserve and Animas vs Weed, with later games leading to semifinals and a third place match. Championship final set for Saturday night.

Letters From Lady Baden Powell And Mrs Grant Pepler

Four letters arrived from the noted ladies. Two were written from Deming thanking Lordsburg residents for hospitality and a fine motel room. Two others came from El Paso reporting a safe trip to El Paso despite the snow.
