Benefit Planned for Playas Family Fire Victim Dance

Residents of Playas plan a benefit dance this Saturday February 17 at the Playas community hall to aid the Thompson family after their Windmill Subdivision mobile home was destroyed by fire on January 18. Century Disco from Las Cruces performs. hours 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with $5 per couple or $3 single. Proceeds aid the down payment on a new mobile home. The family is staying with relatives.

Solar Upgrading Plans Set for Five Border Counties

NMSEI selects three proposals for solar housing upgrades in Dona Ana, Otero, Luna, Hidalgo, and Grant counties. City of Las Cruces with Public Housing Authority, Tierra del Sol, and Dona Ana Solar Energy Society will lead rehabilitation, rural retrofits, and seminars. Start date expected March 1 under Southwest Border Regional Commission grant.

Animas High School names Vance Lee interim boys basketball coach replacing Gerald Layton after layoff by the Animas Board of Education. Superintendent Tom Pace says the action, unrelated to record or player behavior, aims for the school’s best. Lee will coach through season end.

City Cable TV to Add New Channels via Satellite

City Cable Television plans a local receiving station to pull in channels from Atlanta Chicago Oakland Madison Square Garden and the Christian Broadcasting Network with HBO offered. A free viewing period will help subscribers adjust before new rates take effect about 30 to 60 days after installation, rising to 9.88 per month plus HBO at nine dollars.

Hidalgo General Hospital will reopen March 12 with rates set by the county commissioners including 70 for a single room 62 for semi private 80 for ICU 17.50 for baby care and 15 for emergency. The Federal Disaster Assistance Administration adds a new telephone line at its Las Cruces field office for residents near the Arizona New Mexico line in Hidalgo County Virden. Joe D. Winkle says collect calls from Virden are accepted on area code 505 523 5556 and toll free 1 800 432 3653 remains for Sierra Grant Lincoln Catron and other Hidalgo areas to request flood disaster aid.

Hidalgo General Hospital To Open Again March 12

Hidalgo General Hospital will reopen March 12 after being closed since June 1978. An open house is planned March 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. Invitations go to dignitaries and state and local officials. Dr. Tom Hargis is set to join the staff, with a second doctor and more staff to be recruited.

Turner Guilty Of Burglary And Larceny In District Court

Billy Edward Turner a 25 year old from Lordsburg was found guilty in District Court of fourth degree burglary and fourth degree larceny. He received a prison term of one to five years with credit for time served in the county jail.
