A strange nylon air structure named Christ for Cloud Cathedral is being built at the corner of Animal Fourth. The dome will be heated and pressurized by a blower, with ground anchors to withstand high winds and maintain a comfortable interior temperature.
Dan Hill Jr of Western Gas Service announced the company acquired the Ray Edington natural gas operating properties at Rodeo and Animas. The deal closed February, with Western assuming operations immediately. The assets join Western’s Ani Valley network serving Deming Lordsburg and nearby areas in New Mexico and Texas.
March 2 deadline for buying 1962 auto license plates or validating decals. New plates issued for motorcycles and motor scooters while standard plates with validating decals remain for other vehicles. Mrs Margo Fuller of the Puller Agency at 308 South Main Street handles registrations.
The El Paso city council accepted Hunt Building Mart for three steel buildings at Main St between Railway Blvd and Wabash. Bid total 26106 under Banes Co. of El Paso. Banes had argued against Hunt while plans fee 478 was approved. Council also settled paving work with Hugh McMillan Co. and accepted the resignation of Albert M. Stevens as police judge. Kohlhaas Tank and Equipment Co. bid for a transfer tank at the wells site was accepted.
The Animas Panthers travel to Cliff to face the Cowboys in a final regular season game. Cliff handed Animas its only loss this season on November 17, 42 36, as Animas rides a 17 1 record and seeks a rematch win after beating Cliff 72 59 at Animas.
LULAC advances toward a national home with the El Paso purchase of Temple Mt. Sinai on Oregon Street for 77500 dollars. Dorrance Roderick of El Paso funds 10000 dollars, with a matching pledge to be raised by LULAC members. The plan includes an Inter American Affairs Institute to foster Latin American cultural ties. The national convention is set for October 22 to 24 in El Paso. Local council, a 70 member group led by C Altuna president, aims to boost city progress.
Three donations were made this week to the Cafeteria school bus fund by St. Joseph's Ladies Altar Society giving 10 dollars, the Lordsburg PTA 25 dollars, and LULAC 15 dollars. A balance of 108 dollars remains to complete the project and contributions should be sent to Mrs. Charles Williams at 412 West Fifth Street for acknowledgment.
Donald Gardner pleaded guilty to hunting game without a valid license before Justice of the Peace C L Brown. He was fined 50 dollars plus costs or 30 days in the county jail and remanded if the fine is not paid. Gardner and two companions were apprehended in the Burro mountains by Game Conservation Officer S Virgil Jones with a high power rifle.
An early Monday plane crash near Cotton City killed three Hidalgo County residents Erwin Richardson pilot LaVar Merrell and Robert Miller. Investigators from FAA and C A B arrived to determine the cause. Richardson leaves a wife and nine children Merrell a wife and two children Miller was unmarried. Funeral services were held in Cotton City Rodeo and Virden.
Officers and men of C Battery 2nd Gun Battalion New Mexico National Guard rationed in Lordsburg join about 4000 New Mexico Guardsmen Sunday February 18 for Muster Day across the state. Units from Las Cruces Silver City Lordsburg and Deming participate with open house at the Armory from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Captain Jesus Estrada invites the public to attend.
Scanlon Erwin and Associates of Santa Fe under Army Corps of Engineers contract survey potential value of existing structures for public fallout shelters. Results will be evaluated in Washington. approved sites become federally stocked shelters if owners agree. Shelters to be stocked with provisions arriving in early spring. Public buildings with basements like the Methodist Church and Knights of Pythias Hall, mines and caves are being checked.
Mrs. Martha Harvell appointed deputy county treasurer to fill vacancy from Ena Mitchell's resignation. Announcement by county treasurer Margaret Ann Phillips notes Mitchell on vacation in Mexico. Earlier report wrongly stated Harvell worked in the assessor's office during Mitchell's absence.
