The Flks Lodge announces an annual essay contest on Americas future role in world affairs for New Mexico high school students in grades 9 to 12. First prize $100, second $50, third $25. Entries must be original, 700 words max, inked, and accompanied by a brief bio. submission via local lodge by a March deadline.
A party of four Berkeley students returning from an exchange trip in Mexico City were in a highway accident when a tire blew out. Mary Elizabeth Jack of Berkeley was hospitalized and later discharged. Two French students and a Swiss student were among the survivors aided by local families before departing for Berkeley with Robert Chevron of Paris remaining as a guest.
Mrs S E Allen owner of the Coronado and Palace theatres bought Leo's liquor store at Railroad Ave and Shakespeare St. Her sons James and Richard will join the business. A transfer of the liquor license is received and possession will occur soon. Clerk Mrs Kenneth (Terry) Bowers continues. Leo Cohen plans to enter another city business.
The Hidalgo County Board of County Commissioners governs with three members Antone Thygerson Ethel Richins and George Pendleton plus Clerk Marshall Fuller. They control county property set budgets and act as road supervisors and bill payers. The May budget sets spending limits and departments include road building penal administration. They invite public suggestions and meet at the county courthouse on the first Monday each month.
Frances Gahagen, Deming High English teacher and former Scotland exchange teacher, was the guest speaker at the Business and Professional Women's Club Public Relations banquet on Thursday evening February 6 at the American Legion Hall. Sixty guests enjoyed barbecued chicken served by Legion Auxiliary with Legion members as waiters.
The Animas Farm to Market Road from Highway 80 toward Animas will be surveyed and extended. Nine miles are finished with surveying to start in two weeks. Funded by state and federal sources, the project aims to complete about 6 more miles this summer using 1952-53 road appropriations.
State Patrolman John Bradford Jr announces a brake and light certificate inspection this week. A state police sound car is deployed to warn the public to obtain brake and light certificates and ensure driver licenses are valid.
Lordsburg's Maverick basketball squad earned two road victories over Deming and Hatch. The Feb 9 game against Deming showcased the Mavericks' scoring and ball handling as they pulled away after a tied first half.
A mid afternoon east wind brought a brief rain turning to snow as a mild blizzard formed overnight. About one inch of snow fell, equaling .28 inches of precipitation, easing drought on ranges and farms. Temperatures dropped to 19F Tuesday night and down to 14F Thursday dawn with forecast rising temperatures today.
County Commissioners and City Council members, Hidalgo ranchers and business leaders discussed a city park at the old Fair grounds. A county fair in Hidalgo was considered, with cost and labor noted as major factors, and a deed transfer of part of the fair ground to the city proposed to create park facilities and a swimming pool. Venable was tasked to survey the plot and a follow up meeting and surveys will occur in coming days.
Mr and Mrs Van Paquin of Casper Wyoming were found dead from asphyxiation in their cabin at the 180 court owned by Sam Killebrew on Dun can highway near noon Sunday February 11 They checked in Saturday night The gas heater was burning and the door and windows were closed An inquest was held and a daughter in Seattle was involved in plans for disposition of Mr Paquin's body.
