Beall's Greenhouses Opens In Hidalgo County

Beall's Greenhouses began operations two miles off Animas Road in the Cotton City area with a ribbon cutting by owner Tom Beall and NM Secretary of EMD Paul Biderman. The project, worth about 230000 dollars, is partially funded by a 75000 dollar state grant aimed at promoting geothermal heat for year round crops. The Bealls operate with Tom, Pam, and their son Mike and daughter in law Virginia and plan expansion as the site proves successful. Continuous state reporting will occur until studies conclude and obligations are fulfilled.

Hidalgo County EMS praised as rural care model by officials

Hidalgo County commissioners heard EMS Region II director Tom Townsend report on low accident death rates and quick paramedic response. Townsend cited seven counties served, with Hidalgo unique in providing paramedic care and an 8.4 minute average response, as he praised local EMT services. The Lordsburg Post Office plans Saturday full service hours 11 am to 1 pm starting February 16 on a trial basis.

Oratorical Contest Set For March

The Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts an annual oratorical contest in March for Hidalgo County youths under 16 by December 31, 1985. First, second and runner-up win medallions in each division. top boys and girls advance to national levels with a $1000 scholarship as grand prize. Schwickerath and Maestas Win School Board Seats

Carolyn Schwickerath defeats incumbent Edward Elbrock 233 to 184 to win Position Two. Ruben Maestas leads Position Five, with 160 votes, over Tommy Townsend 149 and Jack Lasher 103. New board members take seats in March.

Three Students Injured In Hidalgo County Collision

The Hidalgo County Sheriff reports a February 8 evening crash involving three sophomore students from the Animal Schools. Two cars at about 35 mph collided head on with headlights off, resulting in broken bones and transport to medical facilities. Knights Of Columbus To Distribute Commodities

The Knights of Columbus will distribute commodities under the Needy Food Program. Applications for 1985 commodities must be filed Friday February 22 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Distribution is Saturday February 23 at St. Josephs Church Hall. At a Santa Fe meeting on Sunday February 3 David A Lane was elected Secretary Treasurer of the New Mexico District Attorneys Association and will join the executive committee. The association governs the states Administrative Office of the District Attorneys and influences law enforcement policy.
