Postmaster Felix Gauthier Jr. notes third class mail is a normal part of free enterprise and suggests patrons opt out by writing to the mailer or marking items refused. If refused, mail is returned or destroyed and costs apply. proper postage and handling rules apply.
The golf course will have no work on Sunday February 17 due to wet ground. Work starts at 8:30 a m Sunday February 4 and runs until completion. Only Knights of Pythias and Masons have participated, though membership is not required for public participation.
Spencer Jones of Duncan High School and FFA won first place in the Arizona State FFA public speaking contest in Phoenix. Four contestants opened with a 9:30 a.m. preliminary, then finals at 12:30 p.m. crowned Jones after his talk on Safety on Farm. He earned a medal and 100 dollars for FFA and 200 dollars from Mr. Cohn of Phoenix, and will compete in Kansas City in October. Jones is the son of Virgil Jones and Mr. and Virgil Jones of Virden.
Hidalgo County commissioners appointed Ned Merrell of Cotton City as justice of the peace for precinct 7. He will handle cases in the area and fill in for Justice C L Brown when unavailable. The board also rehired Clayton Yarbrough as maintenance man for district 3, despite his prior discharge linked to a water diversion suit. A voter registration board was appointed with alternates to purge ineligible or deceased names. Emma J. Scofield was named to the Hospital Board. William C. Miller was appointed to the Fair Board. fire department rep Clyde Richins sought funds for a building for equipment, with state fire marshal saying funds must be on hand.
Frank Bowman, general superintendent of the Banner Mine near Lordsburg, was named by Gov. Jack Campbell to replace Bill Griffin on the Western New Mexico University Board of Regents. His term expires January 1, 1969.
Clyde L. Bickerstaff of the IRS District Director in Albuquerque stated that many taxpayers mail Forms W-2 for New Mexico income taxes with federal 1040 returns. The IRS will detach these forms and forward only Copy B to the federal office, delaying refunds if incorrect copies are attached.
Senator and Mrs. R. H. Wamel and baby son of Animas were in a head on collision on State Road 47 north of Be len New Mexico Sunday evening. They were returning to Santa Fe after visiting Mrs Wamel's sister in Mountainair. The baby and Wamel had minor bruises. Mrs. Wamel suffered lacerations and injuries requiring stitches after being taken to an Albuquerque hospital.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Posse sponsors a Little Wonder saddle for the Hidalgo Junior Rodeo winner on Sunday June 16. The 15 inch tree saddle has a padded seat and medium round basket stamped skirt with a five year guarantee. Made by the Vaught Manufacturing Company in Rockwell Texas. Tickets go on sale next week and the saddle is on display at Ace Pawn and Saddle Shop on Railway Avenue.
A pedestrian Dick Robson was struck by a westbound pickup driven by William Short of Lordsburg on Railroad Ave near Hidalgo General Hospital. Robson died on arrival. Patrolman Ivan Kennett investigated. Robson was a retired ranch hand cook and longtime Muir Ranch employee.
District Judge H Vearle Payne of Lordsburg has been named to the United States District Court in Albuquerque by President Kennedy. The nomination, sent to the Senate for confirmation expected late February, follows a long NM political consideration process. Payne has held state legislative roles and judicial posts, and is married with twelve children.
Judy McAlister was chosen as first alternate in the Miss Wool of New Mexico contest at New Mexico State University. Winner Mechle Mitchell of Albuquerque, a freshman at UNM, and McAlister, daughter of B. B. and Mrs. McAlister of Lordsburg, a sophomore at Eastern New Mexico University Portales, majors in secretarial education, plays clarinet, and serves as dorm president.
Miss Emma Saucedo of Lordsburg was chosen sophomore class favorite during the Western New Mexico University student election in Silver City. The campus elected popular personalities and a Valentine dance royal court in connection with the event.
Teen program at the High School Auditorium will feature Beauticians from Stylerite and Opal's giving individual care and makeup demonstrations. Originally scheduled for last Monday, the event was postponed due to snow and is now set for February 21 at 7 30 p m with all teens urged to attend.
Life Magazine highlights Lordsburg New Mexico for the states first wild pig hunt in its February 15 Guide section. March 2 to 10 will attract 100 hunters drawn for permits with roasts planned if hunters outwit wary javelinas. Arch Napier of Albuquerque provided the New Mexico information.
Animas Panthers defeated the Clifton Arizona Trojans 71 to 43 on Clifton court. They trailed 13 10 after the first quarter, led 31 23 at halftime, and exploded for 27 points in the final period. Clifton’s Bill Young led Ani mas with 27 points in the B game. The Panthers finish the season with two road games then enter the District 4 B Tournament at Truth or Consequences facing Weed.
