Hatchita Bears topple the Mavericks 58 51 as Cobas tallies 23 points and Arredondo shines with 23 for Hatchita. Cobas and Tallman lead scoring for Hatchita while Valdez close with 17 for the Bears. Free throws determine the outcome in a fast paced game with final margin eight.

OES Holds District School of Instruction in Silver City

District No. 13 of the Order of the Eastern Star of New Mexico held a school of instruction at the Masonic Temple in Silver City on Friday night February 8 at 6 30 p m. Worthy Grand Matron May Flicker and Worthy Grand Patron Tom Carr presided with Ella Ward District Instructor in charge. All six chapters and leaders attended. Grand chapter will meet in Albuquerque in October.

Scoutorama to Be at Elks Hall February 21

Scouters and Hidalgo County Boy Scouts invite friends to Elks Hall at 715 p m on Thursday February 21 for the annual Scoutorama. The event showcases handcraft and skills learned by scouts and cubs over the past year for parents and peers.

Lordsbury High crowns Lily Vasquez Homecoming Queen

Lily Vasquez senior was crowned Basketball Sweetheart during Lordsbury High School Homecoming weekend activities. The varsity loss 58 51 to Hatch Bears followed a 43 36 win by the junior varsity as attendants and escorts joined the coronation ceremony and dance.

New Highway To Follow Route Of Highway 8

State highway commission will route the new highway through Leodsburg along Highway 80. Plans drawn and the contract set to be let on March 29. Water main relocation requires sidewalk removal and bed installation, with shutoffs during work. A four inch main will serve the north side and connect with the existing lines to supply the entire city.

Heart Sunday Observed As February Heart Month

Governor Mechern proclaims February as Heart Month in line with President Eisenhower's nationwide notice. The piece notes heart disease as a leading health problem causing 53 percent of deaths and affecting 10 million Americans, including 500,000 schoolchildren, with childhood rheumatic fever and congenital heart defects causing serious hardship.

Cotton Farm Day drawing at Elks Club yields prizes

Lordsburg business sponsors fund door prizes for Cotton Farm Day drawing. Orson Richins of Virden drew names. winners include Albert Jones Animas with a basket, Darrell Richins a potted plant, Ena Mitchell Lordsburg a can of oil, and Levion Kerr Animas a radio among other items. 97 people attended with 73 farmers and wives and 10 speakers from A&M College.

Local Menasers Appointed as Des Page and Usher

Mrs Ella Ward an instructor from District No 13 of the Kaellean Star of New Mexico made an official visit to Lordsburg Chapter No 21 at the Masonic Temple on Tuesday night February 12. She read a message from the grand matron May Klicker and grand patron Tom Carr. Mertice Brooks presented Ella with a chapter gift. Charlotte Badgett dedicated a song to her and Ruth Bishop accompanied on piano. Judy Chase presented Maude Green with a 50 year pin and lifetime membership. Green noted she joined Ruth Chapter No 5 Deming fifty years ago this month before transferring to another chapter.

Cotton-Farm Day Draws Large Attendance in Hidalgo County

The Cotton-Farm Day at the Elks Club drew many Hidalgo County farmers and families. Officials B M Kimbley and James Badgett welcomed visitors as N M Morrison and others organized a program with speakers from New Mexico A&M Las Cruces on pink bollworm, nematodes, mechanical harvesting, and cotton marketing.

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce thanks all who contributed to Cotton Farm Day. The general committee included John A. Johnson and Leo Cohen among others. the finance committee featured Howard Lunt and Bill Michaels. Donors listed include E. Allen Morgan Agency El Paso Natural Gas Wrights Bakery and many local businesses. Potato salad for the dinner was prepared by La Fiesta and Little Flick the Plumber.

Scout Troop 122 entertains families at Elks Club

Scouts of Troop 122 led by Scoutmaster Bob Corder hosted families at the Elks Hall Friday evening. The BPOE sponsors and the supper menu included hamburgers tuna salad French fries and coffee. After games the boys did drills and first aid training. Sunday an outing to cliff dwellings yielded rocks and arrow point chippings found with help from Fred Johnson and La Verne Merrill.
