American Legion Burns Mortgage with a Valentine Night

The American Legion Post observed burning the mortgage with a bar and dance on February 9 at the Legion hall. The dinner thanked auxiliary members for helping pay off the building mortgage. Decorations featured red and white colors with red hearts. About 15 members from neighboring Posts attended along with wives, auxiliary members, invited guests, and three charter members Eugene Montague S Jack Heather Ed Wright. Commander Jack led the ceremony with Past Commander W H Elder of Hurley speaking on Legion aims.

Mavericks Edge Hatch Bears In Tight League Clash

Lordsburg Mavericks rallied from a 29 31 deficit to beat Hatch Bears 37 34 on Tuesday night. J W Smith led Mavericks with 12 points while Chavarria of Hatch kept pressure flowing all game and Craddock tied it late with a free throw. Brito added key drives to fuel the comeback.

Car License Plates Arrive For Collector Mrs Cochran

Mrs Eleanor Cochran reports receipt of car license plates numbered 1 through 300. State authorities say truck plates and additional car plates will arrive in about ten days.

Lordsburg Band Parents Club Membership Drive

The Lordsburg Band Parents Club executive board met with the high school band on Monday February 11 at 3 pm to initiate a membership drive. President Eugene Romney urged band members to enroll their parents and friends. a progress report will be given at the next general meeting on March 6 by Mrs. J H Baxter, membership chairman.

Scouts Hold Court of Honor Monday Night

Boy Scout Troop 120 observed Boy Scout Week February 6 to 12 with a potluck supper and Court of Honor at the Methodist church undercroft. Parents attended nearly one hundred percent as awards were announced by Scout Master K C Holleman and Hidalgo district advancement committeeman Bob Barrett. Supreme Chief of Pythian Sisters Visits Deming Lordsburg

Mrs Cleone Hogan supreme chief of the United States Canada and Hawaii paid an official visit to Deming Temple and Western Star Temple Lordsburg at a joint meeting held Thursday evening February 7 A banquet preceded the meeting Officers of Western Star Temple led initiatory work and Hogan presented the Bible used at the 1888 Warsaw Indiana founding. Attendees from Lordsburg included Mrs Mertice Brooks Mrs Odie Lee Haltom and others.

Hospital Airship Rescues Injured Man To Coos Bay

An Elks club airship transported A. V. Carlson by stretcher from Hidalgo County hospital to Coos Bay Oregon. Pilot Roger Barnes landed under moonlight at Municipal airport. Carlson, 67, sustained a broken pelvis, five broken ribs, facial injuries after a head on crash that killed Mrs. Carlson and Wynne Killian.

Worthy Grand Matron Visits Eastern Star in Lordsburg

Mrs Wardie Calloway worthy grand matron of the New Mexico Order of Eastern Star visited Lordsburg Chapter No 21 OES. A six oclock banquet at the Methodist church featured talisman rose corsages and peach cups with a 50 emblem marking the orgs 50th anniversary.

Police Escort U. S. Army Convoy Through State

A convoy of 42 U. S. Army Air Force trucks was escorted by law enforcement through the state on Monday afternoon. Captain John R. Bradford of the State Police met the convoy at the Arizona New Mexico line on Highway 14 and led it along Highway 80 to the Texas line with Lordsburg police joining near the city.

Lordsburg held its first Appreciation Day on February 9 sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Winners included Mrs Cuca Carmona 20 dollars second, Miss Barbara Martinez 27 dollars, and Mrs Juana Arvizo double prize.
