General C G Sage has been promoted to Brigadier General and the Senate has confirmed the appointment. He commanded the 200th Coast Artillery in the Philippines and many friends in Lordsburg celebrate the promotion.
Rev. L. L. Evans of El Paso will preach at 11 o'clock Sunday morning. College Day is observed with a basket offering after the service to support Mc Murry College and the Wesley foundation of Portales. Donations of nickels dimes and dollars are welcomed.
The Poiges Matrons Club of the KE. & met last Friday with Mrs. Mildred Townsend. Past matrons attending included Mrs. J. L. Augustine Mrs. P. M. Chase Mrs. S. M. Chase Mrs. Luelly Clark Mrs. Ben Cochran Mrs. Charles Luller Mrs. Dora Kerr Mrs. H. J. Rolfe Mrs. G. W. Trimble Mrs. Olivia Wells and Mrs. Townsend. After the business session guests Mrs. R. S. Ownby and Mrs. E. M. Fisher enjoyed pumpkin pie and coffee.
Clyde Earl Ely editor and publisher of the Daily Press rerouted from Silver City to Lordsburg and then to Mexico. He was accompanied by Mrs Ely. Lordsburg Chapter No 21 OES met Tuesday evening in Insenie Hall. One member was affiliated and a memorial for Mia Lot Howell, Past Grand Matron who died January 2, was dropped.
Dr A O Bowden, 65, longtime president of New Mexico State College at Silver City from 1922 to 1934, died in Los Angeles. He later served a decade in California as professor of anthropology and archaeology before retiring two years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Hi J Rolfe spent last weekend in Douglas and Bislee for family birthday celebrations. They marked the birthdays of Mr. Rolfe and Mrs. Rolfe's mother, Mrs Isabel Kaater.
Little Ann Culberson daughter of Mr and Mrs J B Culberson fell from a horse last Sunday morning and suffered painful bruises but no fractures were found.
The President Roosevelt crew led by Capt. George Fried returned to a hero’s welcome after rescuing 25 crewmen from the British freighter Antinoe. Also noted, the Episcopal Temperance Society seeks prohibition modification, Dr. James Empringham stating the movement’s erosion. A. S. Rosenbach paid 106000 for a Gutenberg Bible from Melk Monastery, a record book sale.
A wartime notice from George F. Beck of the Denver regional OPA Rent Executive warns New Mexico tenants in Albuquerque Santa Fe Deming and Belen must receive six months notice before eviction, replacing the previous three months. In Carlsbad and Roswell six months was already standard, with possible waivers for buyers who are veterans.
The District Office of Price Administration announces canned carrots and carrot juice exempt from price ceilings for three months. The suspension ends January 28 1946 unless extended. Prices stayed below prior ceilings during the suspension, prompting the action.
The district OPA offices won $372 plus costs against Estelle Smith for alleged rent overcharges. The case cites three times the overcharges. Separate actions target beer prices above OPA ceilings with judgments or injunctions against A. Maes of Las Vegas and Al Monteith of Al's Bar. Maes was fined $50 and Monteith ordered to pay $75. Enforcement reports also note a $250 settlement for Hoffman and Graubarth of Las Vegas for ceiling-price violations.

Wool rugs and carpets resume production and will be sold to consumers by early spring at prices charged in March 1917 according to OPA. Wool floor coverings are a wartime conversion product after production cuts lasting four years due to war.
The Office of Price Administration announces on January 28 that 24 assorted items mostly small food products are exempt from price controls. Included are canned sweet potatoes parsnips peppers Irish potatoes minus French fried varieties frozen shellfish ice cream wafers fresh lettuce imported snuff cigar cuttings and cipplings. George Wood injured in a truck rollover north of Silver City with multiple fractures and injuries. he is in River City.
Lynda Hollingsworth arrived February 4 to visit sister Mrs Pat Ewing and family. Mr Hollingsworth recently returned from Japan and after visiting relatives in California will return to Lordsburg to make his home.
Mrs. C. B. Austin spent Tuesday and Wednesday in El Paso for unspecified visit or duties, reflecting local social or civic engagement activities.

The Torrance the Hidalgo Valencia Union Catron Sandoval Albuquerque and Gallup bore New Mexican names in Pacific campaigns.
Mrs. Freeman McWhorter acted as hostess to the Wednesday Sewing Club gathering this week. Attendance was small because of illness and cold weather reducing participation.
Government urges farmers to move all wheat to market quickly to feed war torn nations. Exports rely on inland surplus as coastal stocks dwindle. Majority of surplus lands lie west of the Mississippi in the Dakotas Montana Nebraska and the Pacific Northwest. About 869 million of 1000 million bushels were still on farms at year’s start.
In wheat regions locally elected A A A farmer-committeemen urge neighbors to sweep out their wheat bins to feed starving people and improve marketing for future harvests. They urge contacting local elevators to move grain efficiently within existing transport limits.
Government aims to keep dairy output high and maintain stable income for milk producers through subsidies or price supports. Stabilization Administrator Collethaw says payments will extend beyond March 31 to at least June with April-June rates to be announced. President Truman asks Congress to authorize food subsidies after June if needed to curb inflation. Dairy subsidies accounted for 16 percent of producers’ 1945 cash income, with payments about 14 percent from dairy production alone.
Secretary of Agriculture Anderson urges farmers to feed less grain to hogs and cattle, cull poultry flocks, raise fewer chickens and turkeys, maintain milk production, and market animals when ready. A shy young man visited Mayo General Hospital to order a full size bird cage for a bird in a hospital ward. He received the cage that evening and soon returned with joy claiming his guardian hen laid four eggs after placing a bird inside.
Beta Sigma Phi I D chapter met Thursday evening at Mrs June Redford home with Mrs Emma Scofield in charge on the program Aware news of Blessings.
